Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Nursery

The Vance estate’s library was a two-story room lined with rare first editions, heavy green velvet draperies, and a massive granite fireplace. Inside, Vanessa paced like a caged animal.
Her bespoke silk dress was torn at the waist, revealing the ridiculous, exposed black spandex underneath. Her mascara was smeared down her cheeks, but the weeping had stopped. In its place was a sharp, frantic energy. Her heels clicked violently against the parquet floor.
Two armed state troopers stood by the double doors, their hands resting neutrally near their holsters.
"I have rights!" Vanessa snapped, her voice vibrating with venom. "I am the lady of this house! You have no legal right to detain me in my own home without formal charges being filed! Do you know who my attorneys are? Sullivan & Cromwell will have your badges by midnight!"
The troopers didn't blink. They didn't move. They had orders from the District Attorney’s office, which was already drafting emergency search warrants based on Carter Hayes’s expedited disclosures.
Across the courtyard, inside the newly decorated, eight-thousand-square-foot east wing, the baby’s nursery sat in total darkness.
It was a masterpiece of luxury. A custom-built, hand-carved mahogany crib from Florence sat in the center of the room. Hand-painted murals of woodland creatures adorned the walls. Wardrobes were stuffed with cashmere booties, miniature Dior suits, and silver rattles. A shrine built for a child that did not exist.
Suddenly, the French doors leading to the second-floor nursery balcony clicked.
A shadowy figure slipped through the sheer curtains, moving with quiet, practiced agility. It wasn't the police.
It was Thomas Vance—Marcus’s estranged younger brother, the black sheep of the family who had been cast out of Vance Logistics five years earlier following a massive corporate embezzlement scandal.
Thomas carried a black leather duffel bag. His breath was shallow, his eyes darting across the room. He didn't turn on the lights. Using a small penlight between his teeth, he moved directly toward the hand-carved crib, reached underneath the mattress, and pulled out a hidden electronic lockbox bolted to the bed frame.
"Come on, come on..." Thomas hissed, punching a six-digit code into the keypad.
*BEEP. BEEP. CLICK.*
The lock popped open. Inside was not jewelry. Inside were three forged European passports, two flash drives containing the encrypted routing numbers for Arthur Vance’s offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, and a small, sealed glass vial containing a clear liquid labeled *Digoxin – 50mg/mL*.
"Looking for this, Tommy?"
The voice hit the darkness like a gunshot.
Thomas violently flinched, dropping the duffel bag. The lights snapped on with blinding intensity.
Marcus stood in the doorway of the nursery. Behind him stood two state troopers with service weapons drawn, along with Detective Sarah Briggs of the State Police Major Crimes Unit.
Thomas froze, the vial of poison clutched in his trembling right hand. "Marcus... listen to me. It’s not what it looks like. I was just—"
"You were helping her," Marcus said. His voice was completely devoid of emotion. "All these years, I thought Vanessa was just an ambitious girl from Queens who got lucky working for Clara. But she didn't come up with this corporate trust scheme alone. She didn't know the exact language of Arthur’s codicil. You did."
Thomas swallowed hard, his skin turning a sickly shade of gray under the nursery chandeliers. "Marcus, you don't understand what Arthur did to me. He cut me out! He gave you everything—the shipping lines, the terminals, the family seat! He left me with scraps! Five million dollars? In this city, that’s nothing! That’s an insult!"
"So you decided to murder my family?" Marcus stepped into the room, ignoring the troopers who moved forward to flank Thomas. "Did you tell Vanessa to poison Clara, Tommy? Did you give her the digitalis?"
"No! No, that was all Vanessa!" Thomas screamed, breaking down in an instant, the pathetic bravado evaporating. "Clara found out Vanessa was skimming money from the company charity accounts! Clara was going to tell you! Vanessa panicked! She said if Clara died, she could comfort you, marry you, and we could split Arthur’s trust once the old man died! I didn't want Clara to die, Marcus! I swear to God, I didn't want anyone to die!"
"And what about me?" Marcus asked, his voice chillingly quiet. "What was supposed to happen to me on Tuesday, Tommy?"
Thomas couldn't look his brother in the eye. He looked down at the glass vial in his hand.
"She... she was going to slip it into your scotch after you signed the hospital paperwork," Thomas sobbed. "The doctor was going to rule it an accidental overdose caused by grief and stress. Then Vanessa would be the sole executor of the estate for the new baby, and I’d get my forty percent offshore. Please, Marcus... she manipulated me! She’s a monster!"
"You're both monsters," Marcus said.
Detective Briggs stepped forward, her handcuffs clicking open with a loud, metallic snap. "Thomas Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, grand larceny, and corporate fraud. Put the vial on the table and put your hands behind your head."
Thomas let the glass vial drop onto the plush cashmere blanket inside the crib. He offered no resistance as the troopers shoved him against the mahogany wall, securing the steel cuffs around his wrists.
Marcus turned away from his brother, walking to the edge of the crib. He looked down at the hand-painted wooden headboard, where the name *Arthur Vance Jr.* had been delicately stenciled in gold leaf.
A fake name for a stolen child, bought to seal a double murder.

"Detective Briggs," Marcus said without turning around. "Take my brother down to central booking. And then bring Vanessa here. Bring her to this nursery. I want her to see what she built."
