Chapter 15 - The Vault of the Patrician

The silence in the corridor was thick enough to suffocate. Daniel stood with his back pressed hard against the electronic door, his arms wrapped around Noah like iron bands. The boy’s tears soaked through Daniel’s shirt, his little body trembling violently against Daniel’s chest.
Before them stood Marcus Miller—the man Daniel had trusted with his life, the detective who had sat at his kitchen table, drinking coffee, promising that the monster who had hurt Noah would rot in a concrete cell forever.
"You sat in my home, Marcus," Daniel whispered, his voice trembling not with fear, but with an incandescent, venomous hatred. "You drank my coffee. You held my son."
"And I performed my duties with exceptional professional restraint," Miller replied smoothly, tapping a command into his tactical tablet. "Do you have any idea how difficult it was to keep the local precinct from bungling this? If some overzealous state trooper had arrested Evelyn during the initial raid without our team securing the perimeter, the recovery protocol would have been delayed by a decade."
Miller gestured slightly with his left hand. Two heavily armed private contractors moved forward, their assault rifles raised, targeting Daniel’s chest with red laser sights.
"Hand the boy to Evelyn, Daniel," Miller ordered, his tone utterly devoid of malice, carrying the casual authority of a banker executing a foreclosure. "There is no scenario here where you leave this corridor with him. Cooperate, and we’ll ensure you receive a generous annuity. Enough to live comfortably in Europe. You can start another family. A real one."
"He *is* my family!" Daniel roared.
"He is an organic safe-deposit box!" Evelyn snapped, her composure cracking for a split second, revealing the rabid, ravenous greed beneath her aristocratic facade. "He contains nine hundred million dollars in bearer-asset clearances and the proprietary genetic patents of Whitmore Biologics! Do you honestly think a woman of my standing would have endured your pathetic, mundane domestic life for two years just to play mommy to an infant?"
She lunged forward, her hand reaching for Noah’s arm.
Daniel didn't retreat. With an explosion of desperate, primal strength, he swung his heavy leather work boot directly into Evelyn’s knee.
A sickening *crack* echoed through the hall as her patella shattered. Evelyn shrieked, a high, piercing wail of agony as she collapsed onto the slick floorboards, dropping the heated ladle. The red-hot bowl struck the wood, instantly scorching a black, smoking scar into the floor.
"Fire!" Miller barked.
A rifle cracked. The bullet tore through Daniel’s upper bicep, spraying warm blood across Noah’s sweater. The sheer kinetic impact spun Daniel around, slamming him against the locked emergency door. Noah’s screams pierced the corridor—shrill, terrified, deafening.
*Ding.*
Suddenly, the red keypad on the door flashed bright emerald green. The heavy electromagnetic deadbolt hissed open.
A hand reached out from the gloom of the stairwell, grabbed Daniel’s collar, and hauled him backward through the threshold with superhuman force.
"Down!" Dr. Cross’s voice roared from the darkness.
Cross, his face masked in blood from his earlier head wound, threw a military-grade flashbang grenade into the hallway before slamming the heavy steel door shut and throwing a manual iron crossbar across the frame.
*BOOM!*
The concussive blast rattled the door in its frame, followed immediately by the chaotic shrieks and muffled curses of Miller’s tactical team on the other side.

"Stairs! Now!" Cross gasped, leaning heavily on the banister, a second Glock clutched in his trembling hand. "The sub-basement archive. It’s the only room with an independent air filtration system. If they deploy the neuro-gas, we die in this stairwell!"
