Chapter 26 - The Architecture of a Mother's Sins

"Drop it, Daniel," Marcus said, his finger tightening on the trigger. "Or I blow your brains across your mother’s lap, and I take what’s left of the boy anyway."

Daniel kept his weapon raised, the barrel locked onto Marcus's chest. "You take one step, Marcus, and Noah won't be the only one dying tonight."

"Look at you," Marcus sneered, his handsome, patrician face twisted into an ugly smirk. "The prodigal son. Playing the martyr. Do you really think this was all Arthur's idea? Do you really believe your precious, saintly mother was an innocent victim?"

Daniel didn't flinch, but his eyes flicked to Eleanor.

She sat on the edge of the gurney, her head bowed, her silver hair curtaining her face. She didn't deny it.

"Tell him, Eleanor," Marcus laughed, the sound cold and hollow against the echoing hangar. "Tell your boy why we kept you in Geneva instead of putting a bullet in your head twenty-five years ago. Tell him who sold the first patent to my father."

"Shut up, Marcus," Eleanor said quietly.

"She sold you, Daniel!" Marcus barked. "When your father died, the company was four hundred million in debt. Eleanor couldn't maintain the laboratories. So she made a deal with Arthur Vance. She traded the biological rights to the Whitmore genetic registry—your DNA, Daniel—in exchange for an offshore trust and forty percent of the Vance pharmaceuticals syndicate!"

Daniel felt a sickening vertigo sweep through his mind, more violent than any blow he had taken tonight.

*No.*

"She didn't run away to protect you," Marcus hissed. "She ran away because she knew the retrovirus she designed was unstable! She let Arthur experiment on you as a child, she let him test the phase-one delivery system on your bone marrow, and when she realized the Vances were going to harvest her next, she faked the plane crash! But Arthur caught her. And she’s been our house guest ever since."

Daniel looked down at his mother. The world seemed to stop spinning, freezing into an icy, hollow void.

"Is it true?" Daniel whispered, his voice dangerously low.

Eleanor slowly lifted her head. Her slate-gray eyes were dry, devoid of tears, filled only with the cold, calculating intelligence of a master architect who had spent a lifetime playing chess with human lives.

"I did what was necessary to preserve our bloodline, Daniel," she said, her voice flat, devoid of remorse. "Your father was a weak romantic. He would have let the Vance family bankrupt us, dissolve our patents, and turn the Whitmore name into a footnote. I made sure our genetic legacy survived. You were never in danger of death. You were designed to endure."

"And Noah?" Daniel’s voice trembled with a rage so profound it threatened to rip his chest open. "Did you design my son to be branded with a hot iron by Arthur’s psychopath daughter?!"

"Noah is the culmination of the work," Eleanor said, looking at the sleeping child with clinical detachment. "Evelyn was an idiot. A blunt instrument. She panicked because she couldn't extract the cipher. But now... the cipher is dissolved in his blood. He is the master patent, Daniel. With him, we control the Vances. We control everything."

Daniel stared at the woman he had mourned for twenty-five years.

She wasn't a victim waiting to be rescued.

She was just another Vance in different skin.

"You're not a mother," Daniel whispered. "You're a monster."

"And you are alive because of me," Eleanor replied smoothly.

Marcus smirked, stepping forward. "Enough family drama. Lower the gun, Daniel. Hand over the child, and maybe I let you bleed out in peace."

Daniel looked at Marcus. Then he looked at Eleanor.

"You both forgot one thing," Daniel said softly.

Marcus frowned. "What?"

"I don't care about the patent," Daniel whispered. "I don't care about the money. I just care about my son."

Daniel didn't aim at Marcus.

He swung the barrel down and fired a three-round burst directly into the high-pressure hydraulic fuel line running to the idling helicopter's main turbine behind Marcus.
