Chapter 28 - Fracture of the Dynasty

"You sound remarkably confident for a man who is bleeding to death on a highway," Arthur Vance replied, his voice chillingly smooth.
"I'm not on a highway, Arthur," Daniel said. "I know where you're docked. You didn't anchor off Montauk. The blizzard closed the outer sound two hours ago. You're harbored at the private deep-water slip at Oyster Bay. The old Vance estate."
Across the line, Arthur let out a dry, rattling chuckle.
"Smart boy. Just like your father. But your father had a conscience, Daniel. And that was the defect that killed him. Do you really believe you can breach my vessel? Do you think your mother’s presence gives you leverage? Eleanor was an employee who outlived her usefulness twenty-five years ago. Shoot her. It will save me the cost of her cremation."
Eleanor’s face drained of what little color remained. The betrayal hit her not as a moral shock, but as a total collapse of her lifelong arrogance. She had believed she was an equal partner in the Vance empire; to Arthur, she was nothing more than an expired piece of proprietary software.
"Arthur!" Eleanor screamed at the phone, lunging toward the microphone. "The child’s genetic cascade has initiated! The synthesis is happening inside his bone marrow! If you kill him, you kill your own cure!"
"Then I will harvest him while his heart is still beating," Arthur said coldly. "Bring him to me, Daniel. Or watch him dissolve from the inside out. The clock is ticking."
The call disconnected.
Daniel tossed the phone onto the dashboard.
The heavy rescue truck was barrelling eastward along Route 25A, cutting through the North Shore of Long Island—the historic Gold Coast of gilded-age mansions, private marinas, and high-security family compounds.
In the jump-seat behind him, Noah let out a soft, guttural groan.
Daniel slammed the brakes, pulling the massive truck onto the shoulder of an abandoned golf course road. He killed the siren and spun around into the cabin.
Noah’s skin was pale, almost translucent, but beneath the surface, the glowing violet tracer lines had spread from his arm across his tiny chest and neck. The boy’s breathing was rhythmic, deep, unnatural. His heart was beating at an impossible rate, like the fluttering wings of a hummingbird.
"What is happening to him?" Daniel demanded, grabbing Eleanor by the wrist, squeezing until her bones ground together. "Tell me the truth, or I swear to God I will leave you in the snow for Evelyn!"
"It’s the rewriting protocol," Eleanor gasped, pain twisting her face. "The synthetic sequence isn't an infection, Daniel! It’s an apex genome. It’s replacing his damaged cellular sequences with synthetic redundancies. It’s... it’s an artificial evolution. But the process generates massive metabolic heat. If his core isn't stabilized with the cryogenic wash aboard the yacht's medical bay, his brain will swell. He won't survive the transformation!"
"The yacht has the wash?"
"Yes!" Eleanor cried. "Arthur built the medical suite specifically to receive the harvest! The cryogenic centrifuge, the neuro-stabilizers—everything is in the sub-deck lab of *The Sovereign Patriarch*! If you want your son to live, you have to get him onto that ship!"
Daniel looked at his mother. In her eyes, he saw the truth—not born of love, but of desperate self-preservation. She knew that the only place on earth containing the equipment to save Noah was the very fortress where Arthur Vance waited to kill them.
It wasn't a choice. It was a trap forged in iron and ice.
Daniel reached down, untying Noah from the seat, cradling the burning child against his chest. He pressed his forehead against his son’s burning skin.
"Just a little longer, Noah," Daniel whispered. "Just hold on a little longer."

He climbed back into the driver's seat, shifted the Oshkosh into gear, and drove through the gated stone pillars of the Vance family marina.
