Chapter 34 - The Ghost in the Submersible

Daniel reacted instantly, drawing his tactical knife from his boot sheath and bringing the serrated blade down toward the fingers gripping the hatch.

"Wait!"

The voice wasn't Evelyn's. Nor was it Arthur's.

A young man, wearing the grease-stained flight suit of a Vance maritime technician, pulled himself over the sill, coughing up seawater. His chest was covered in second-degree steam burns, and his security lanyard identified him as *Marcus - Propulsion Specialist*.

"I'm not with them!" the technician gasped, holding up burned, trembling hands. "I was locked in the bilge when the charges blew! I set the ejection sequence for this craft before the power cut! If you kill me, you can't open the outer hull doors!"

Daniel held the knife inches from the boy's throat, his eyes scanning the corridor behind him. The airlock corridor was filling with water at an alarming rate; in less than thirty seconds, the entire bay would be submerged.

"Get inside," Daniel snarled, grabbing the tech by the collar and dragging him through the opening.

Daniel slammed the manual sealing wheel. The heavy hatch locked into place with three mechanical clunks, the airtight seals inflating with a high-pitched whine. Outside, through the thick quartz porthole of the hatch, they watched the airlock compartment completely fill with churning, black seawater within five seconds.

"Initiate launch!" Sarah shouted from the co-pilot’s seat. She was furiously flipping toggle switches across the submersible’s flight board, her hands moving with an eerie, muscle-memory familiarity that chilled Daniel to the bone.

"How do you know how to fly this?" Daniel demanded, strapping himself into the pilot's harness.

"I designed the interface," Sarah said quietly, her eyes glued to the digital screens. "Before Arthur put me in the tank... I wasn't just his biological specimen, Daniel. I was his Chief Research Officer. I built the delivery platform for Bloodline Zero."

Daniel stared at the woman he had loved, the woman whose memory he had mourned for three agonizing years. The horrific reality of his entire marriage crashed over him like a secondary tidal wave.

"You built it?" Daniel’s voice was barely a whisper. "Our whole life... our home in Boston... the penthouse..."

"I was running away from him!" Sarah’s voice cracked with hysterical grief as she flipped the master ballast switches. "I stole the primary synthetic genome to destroy it! But I was already pregnant with Noah. Arthur intercepted my car on the Massachusetts Turnpike. He faked my death at the hospital, extracted the synthesized genome from my placenta, and kept me in cold stasis so my cellular structure wouldn't degrade before Noah was born!"

"Separation sequence engaged!" Marcus yelled from the rear engineering station, slamming his palm onto a guarded red plunger.

Underneath their seats, heavy pneumatic thrusters detonated.

*CLANG-BOOM!*

The four massive locking clamps securing the submersible to the yacht sheared away. Outside the cockpit's forward panoramic viewport, the bottom of the *Sovereign Patriarch’s* bow split open like the jaws of a whale.

The submersible dropped into the ink-black depths of the Atlantic Ocean just as the forward section of the massive yacht buckled in half.

Through the submersible’s forward sonar display, they watched the ghost-like wireframe of the five-hundred-foot superyacht tear itself into two pieces. Millions of bubbles, burning debris, and ruptured fuel tanks blossomed into the deep like underwater fireworks. The great leviathan of the Vance dynasty was sliding downward into an oceanic trench five thousand feet below.

Inside the quiet, pressurized cockpit, the only sound was the rhythmic hum of the electric drive motors and the ragged, shallow breathing of the one-year-old child.

"Look at his arm," Sarah whispered, her face pale as a sheet.

Daniel leaned over Noah’s harness.

On Noah’s left forearm, the terrible scar from the hot metal ladle—the wound that had started this entire nightmare when Daniel first spotted the abuse through the hidden camera in the nursery—was reacting to the submersible’s low-frequency UV lighting.

The scarred, puckered flesh had turned translucent. Beneath the skin, clearly visible to the naked eye, was a microscopic matrix of golden geometric circuitry, etched directly into the child's bone.

And directly in the center of the burn mark, glowing with a soft, pulsing light, was a twenty-digit alphanumeric code.
