Chapter 44 - The Awakening of the Forty Million

At 06:00 Eastern Standard Time, the sun rose over a world that had fundamentally ceased to be what it was twenty-four hours earlier.
In Washington D.C., inside the subterranean command bunker of the Pentagon, General Marcus Hayes stared in utter disbelief at the global telemetry grid. Across the giant digital world map, forty million red blinking alert nodes—each representing a child infected with the synthetic Vance neurotoxin—had simultaneously flipped from crimson to a steady, tranquil green.
"Report!" Hayes barked, his voice echoing through the hyper-tense operations pit. "Did the CDC deploy the airborne counter-agent?! Did the European stockpiles initiate aerosol dispersion?!"
"Negative, General," the chief biosurveillance officer stammered, frantically cross-referencing live data streams from the World Health Organization. "No terrestrial agencies deployed counter-measures. At 02:44 hours, an ultra-low frequency carrier wave originated from coordinates in the North Atlantic—Dead Man’s Reef. It bypassed all orbital satellites and transmitted directly through consumer cellular arrays and power grids."
"A frequency cured an incurable retrovirus?!" Hayes slammed his fist onto the stainless-steel console. "Biologically impossible! What did it do to those kids?!"
"That’s... that’s the terrifying part, sir," the officer replied, his hands shaking over his keyboard. "Field reports from Johns Hopkins, the Pasteur Institute, and Tokyo Central Hospital are flooding the secure channels. The children aren't just cured. The pathogen didn't die; it was rewritten. Their cellular mitochondria are operating at four hundred percent baseline efficiency. Synaptic development has accelerated by a factor of eight. And every single child... their blood contains an identical, non-human synthetic protein marker."
"A signature," General Hayes whispered, his face draining of color. "Whose signature?"
"It’s an encrypted cryptographic sequence," the technician answered, pulling up a high-resolution electron microscope scan on the main projection wall.
The protein chain was not randomly folded. It was mathematically structured into microscopic, repeating geometric runes.
"It spells a name, sir," the technician whispered. "Project Eden: Seed Zero. Vance."
Meanwhile, twelve miles off the jagged coast of Maine, the surface of the freezing Atlantic Ocean erupted.
The titanium Hydro-Pod breached the rolling black waves like an artillery shell, soaring twenty feet into the grey morning air before splashing violently back down into the churning froth. The automatic buoyancy bladders instantly deployed, stabilizing the sphere amidst the five-foot swells.
Inside the cramped capsule, Sarah gashed her forehead against the frame, blood dripping into her eyelashes. She choked down the nausea of the violent deceleration, her hands immediately flying to Noah’s harness.
"Noah... Noah, baby, look at me," she gasped.
The one-year-old child blinked. His skin was warm. The lethal fever that had threatened to boil his brain forty-eight hours ago was completely gone. His little fingers reached up, touching the cut on Sarah’s forehead.
As his fingertips brushed the broken skin, Sarah felt an inexplicable sensation—a warm, soothing current of electrical energy washing across her temples. The throbbing pain behind her eyes vanished instantly. The bleeding slowed to a complete stop.
Sarah pulled back, her breath catching in her throat, staring at the baby in sheer, unadulterated awe and terror.
"What did she make you...?" she whispered.
Suddenly, a deafening mechanical thrum beat down from the heavy storm clouds above. A spotlight of piercing white magnesium light tore through the morning fog, illuminating the floating pod.
Sarah shielded Noah, looking up through the quartz hatch.
Hovering fifty feet above the water was an unmarked, matte-black MH-60 Black Hawk stealth helicopter. From the open cabin door, three operatives dressed in sterile, white hazmat tactical suits descended rapidly on fast-ropes, their assault carbines leveled directly at the escape pod.
May you like
They were not the U.S. military.
Emblazoned on the chest plates of the tactical suits was the obsidian serpent crest of the Vance Global Syndicate.
