Chapter 45 - The Paternity of Shadows

The extraction was brutal, swift, and calculated with military perfection.

The hatch of the Hydro-Pod was blasted open with linear cutting tape. Before Sarah could fight, hands sheathed in heavy Kevlar grabbed her arms, pinning her down onto the swaying hull while another operative ripped Noah from the safety harness.

"No! Don't touch him!" Sarah shrieked, kicking wildly, her fingernails clawing at the operative's tinted visor. "Noah!"

"Target secured. The Zero Seed is intact," a cold, synthesized voice crackled through the operative’s radio. "Sedate the female. Director's orders."

A pneumatic hypospray hissed against Sarah’s neck. Cold, viscous chemical darkness flooded her bloodstream. The sound of the helicopter blades faded into a low, droning hum, and the grey Maine sky collapsed into total blackness.

...

When Sarah opened her eyes, she was not dead, nor was she in a federal holding cell.

She was strapped to an ergonomic titanium gurney inside an ultra-modern, subterranean laboratory. Fluorescent lights burned her retinas. The air smelled of medical-grade disinfectant and bitter almond extract.

Beside her, secured inside an airtight, glass-walled biocontainment bassinet, lay Noah. He was asleep, monitored by hundreds of fiber-optic sensors taped across his small chest and temples.

"You shouldn't struggle, Dr. Mercer," a voice murmured from the shadows beyond the glass. "The paralytic will take another twenty minutes to metabolize from your motor cortex."

The silhouette stepped into the harsh glare of the clinical lights.

Sarah’s breath seized in her throat. Her heart hammered against her ribs with such violent force she thought her chest would rupture.

"Evelyn...?" Sarah choked out, her voice cracked and dry.

Standing before her was not the broken, comatose matriarch they had left behind in the ruins of the Vance manor, nor was it a corpse. Evelyn Vance looked revitalized, younger, her silver hair pulled back into a severe, elegant chignon, wearing an impeccably tailored charcoal suit. Across her throat was a thin, surgical scar where Daniel had once threatened her life.

"You're dead," Sarah whispered, tears of rage and confusion stinging her eyes. "Daniel saw you die in the collapse!"

"Daniel saw what I meticulously orchestrated for him to see," Evelyn replied, her voice smooth, refined, and chillingly devoid of motherly warmth. "My husband Arthur was a crude, short-sighted barbarian. He believed power lay in the control of capital and political puppets. He never understood that true divinity lies in the code of life itself."

"You used Daniel," Sarah spat, the feeling returning to her fingertips as she tested the cold steel restraints binding her wrists. "You used your own stepson! You burned your grandson with a hot iron ladle!"

Evelyn walked slowly toward the glass bassinet, gazing down at Noah with an expression of cold, scientific adoration.

"A ladle, Dr. Mercer, is an ancient tool. Crude, domestic, easily overlooked by a husband whose ego blinded him to the genius around him," Evelyn said, tapping her manicured fingernail against the glass. "Arthur believed I was punishing Daniel's mother through her descendant. He thought it was the petty cruelty of a jealous stepmother. That vanity allowed me to imprint the bio-cipher into Noah right under Arthur’s surveillance cameras without him ever suspecting the truth."

"What truth?!" Sarah demanded, straining against the leather straps.

Evelyn turned back, her cold, predatory eyes boring into Sarah’s soul.

"Daniel is not Noah’s biological father, Sarah."
