Chapter 31 - The Boiling Point of Blood

The concussion of the lower deck explosion ripped through the titanium superstructure of *The Sovereign Patriarch* like the hammer of an angry god.
Floor plates buckled beneath Daniel’s boots. Overhead, banks of halogen lights exploded in showers of sparks, plunging the stasis laboratory into a violent, pulsing wash of ruby emergency strobes and shrill acoustic alarms. The blast wave threw Daniel forward onto his knees, his right arm locked like an iron vise around Noah’s trembling body.
Underneath the heavy canvas of Daniel’s coat, Noah was burning. It wasn't the ordinary, feverish heat of a sick child; it was an unnatural, radiant fire that scorched through Daniel’s woolen shirt. Through the infant’s thin cotton onesie, a terrifying lattice of bioluminescent violet veins pulsed across the boy’s chest and up the curve of his neck. Noah’s eyes, normally wide and curious, were rolled back, his tiny fists clenched so tightly that his fingernails broke the skin of his palms.
"Get him into the pod, you fool!" Arthur Vance screamed through the rising smoke.
The patriarch had staggered against the central command console, but his grip on the silver remote detonator had never wavered. The patrician composure that had masked his monstrous ego for decades was completely gone, stripped away to reveal a feral, desperate beast. Blood trickled from a shrapnel cut along Arthur's hairline, matting his silver hair against his skull.
"If his cellular core exceeds forty-one degrees Celsius without the stabilizer feed, the synthetic sequence will liquify his vascular system!" Arthur lunged across the glass-strewn floor, extending a claw-like hand toward Daniel. "Give him to me, Daniel! Everything I built, thirty years of genetic dominance, dies if his heart gives out!"
"He’s not an asset, Arthur!" Daniel roared, his voice tearing from his raw throat. He raised the tactical 9mm, his sight alignment wavering through the haze of aerosolized fire retardant, and pulled the trigger.
*Crack!*
The heavy hollow-point slug punched through the meat of Arthur’s left shoulder, spinning the old billionaire backward. Arthur let out a choked gasp, crashing against the reinforced acrylic cylinder that held the floating, pale body of Sarah.
The glass didn't shatter, but a long, spiderweb fracture raced across its surface. Pressurized cryogenic fluid hissed through the breach, spraying freezing nitrogen vapor into the sweltering heat of the burning lab.
Inside the tube, Sarah’s eyes fluttered.
Daniel froze, his heart slamming against his ribs like a sledgehammer. *Sarah.* The woman he had buried in an empty grave three years ago. Her dark hair floated weightlessly in the amber solution, her lips turning from pale lilac to a faint, gasping pink as the oxygen-rich fluid began to drain through the cracked seal. She wasn't an illusion. She wasn't a phantom engineered to break his sanity. She was alive.
Before Daniel could take a single step toward her, the reinforced steel bulkhead at the far end of the corridor groaned under immense mechanical pressure.
*BOOM!*
The heavy blast door was blown off its hydraulic hinges, hurtling inward like a guillotine blade and crushing a three-ton centrifuge to twisted scrap. Through the billowing black smoke of burning marine diesel and thermite, a figure emerged.
It was Evelyn.
She was unrecognizable as the immaculately dressed, aristocratic heiress who had sneered at Daniel across their penthouse dining table. Her designer clothes were shredded to rags, soaked in saltwater and slick with black fuel oil. Half of her face was blistered and blackened from the breaching charge, her right eye swollen shut, while the left burned with a maniacal, incandescent hatred.
In her left hand, she held the empty shell of a military-grade detonator. In her right, she dragged a smoking submachine gun she had stripped from a dead security contractor in the flooded tender bay.
"Father!" Evelyn shrieked, her voice a shredded, psychotic rasp that cut through the klaxons. "Did you really think you could write me out of the bloodline? Did you think you could trade me for Sarah’s little lab rat?!"
Arthur groaned from the floor, clutching his bleeding shoulder, his eyes wide with genuine terror as he looked at his daughter. "Evelyn... stay back. You don't understand the sequence—"
"I understand everything!" she screamed, raising the weapon and leveling it straight at the glass pod containing Sarah. "You spent twenty-eight years telling me I was your masterpiece! And then you engineered *her*! You made her carry the real cure, and you left me with the degenerating strain!"
Evelyn’s bloodshot gaze whipped toward Daniel and locked onto the glowing child in his arms.
"And you, Daniel," she hissed, her teeth bared in a bloody snarl. "You wondered why I put the ladle to his arm? Why I pressed that burning steel into his flesh until he screamed? Because I had to burn away the dermal tracker, Daniel! I had to dig out the subcutaneous beacon before Arthur found us! But you—you stupid, blind, sentimental idiot—you called the police. You brought him right to our doorstep!"
Noah let out another piercing, unearthly shriek. The violet light beneath his skin suddenly surged, illuminating the entire chamber in a blinding, radiant flare. On the ceiling, the master diagnostic monitors began to chime in frantic, catastrophic unison:
*CELLULAR COLLAPSE IMMINENT. RETROVIRAL CASCADE AT 94%. CRITICAL VENTING IN FIVE... FOUR...*
"Shoot her, Daniel!" Arthur spat, coughing up crimson froth. "Shoot my daughter, or she will burn us all into the sea!"

Evelyn’s finger tightened on the trigger of the submachine gun, her face twisting into a hideous, victorious grin. "Say goodbye to your family, Daniel."
