Chapter 14 - Blood Against Steel

The flames formed an amphitheater of roaring gold and blinding white heat around them. The ceiling of the grand ballroom groaned, long tongues of fire licking down the velvet draperies. Smoke coiled around the chandelier above, its crystal pendants vibrating from the intense thermal updrafts.
"Move away from that hatch, Julian," Daniel snarled, the front sight of his Glock locked onto the bridge of his brother’s nose. "Move, or I swear to God I’ll paint this burning floor with what’s left of your brain."
Julian didn't flinch. He didn't even blink. He reached slowly into his tailored breast pocket and drew out a thin, gold-plated remote detonator, resting his thumb lightly upon the pulsing green switch.
"Pull the trigger, Danny boy," Julian said, his voice silky, cultured, completely untouched by the panic of the roaring blaze. "Go on. Shoot your big brother. The exact microsecond my pulse ceases, the thermite charges strapped beneath that cellar hatch will detonate. Mia and Nora won't even have time to scream. They will be vaporized into twenty thousand degrees of white-hot liquid steel."
Daniel’s finger froze on the trigger. A drop of sweat, mixed with soot, burned into his eye, but he dared not wipe it away. "Why, Julian? Ashcroft was yours if you wanted it! The companies, the offshore holdings—I never cared about the money! Why kill Clara? Why try to murder a two-year-old baby?!"
Julian’s serene smile instantly vanished, replaced by a grotesque mask of aristocratic fury.
"Because she wasn't yours, you fool!" Julian hissed, taking a sudden step forward, his silver cane striking the marble with the crack of a rifle shot. "Clara was promised to *me*! Father arranged the marriage before I left for Harvard! But she looked at you—the quiet, soft-hearted second son—and she dared to reject me! When I faked my drowning to escape the SEC investigations, I expected her to wait for me. Instead, I returned to find her in your bed, carrying your child!"
"Nora is my daughter!" Daniel yelled, the veins in his neck bulging against the suffocating air.
"Nora is a stain on the Whitmore bloodline!" Julian screamed back. "Her trust fund holds the voting shares to the European shipping docks—three billion dollars that belong to *me*! Vanessa was supposed to drop her neatly, an unfortunate slip from a defective Victorian railing. But you... you had to play the comic-book hero. You caught her. And in doing so, you signed Clara's death warrant, and now, your own."
A deafening crack tore through the ceiling. A massive structural beam, engulfed in roaring fire, came crashing down directly between them, throwing up a blinding curtain of sparks and burning timber.
Julian lunged forward with unnatural, vicious speed, swinging the heavy silver head of his cane like a club. The blow struck Daniel across the right temple, splitting his skin and knocking the handgun spinning across the flaming floorboards.

Daniel hit the marble hard, his vision swimming with stars and fire. Julian stood over him, pressing the razor-sharp tip of the cane’s hidden blade directly against Daniel’s throat.
"Did you really think a father's love could defeat fifteen years of planning?" Julian whispered, pressing the blade deeper until a trickle of crimson ran down Daniel's collar. "Watch the cellar hatch, little brother. Watch them burn."
