Chapter 16 - The Phantom Fleet

Outside the flaming mansion, the night sky was suddenly split by the deafening, rhythmic thrum of dual helicopter rotors.

A blinding cone of halogen searchlights punched through the thick black smoke of the skylight, illuminating Julian’s manic face in harsh, unforgiving white light. A booming voice echoed from a loudspeaker above, shaking the remaining stained-glass windows:

*"THIS IS THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION. DROP YOUR WEAPON AND STEP AWAY FROM THE CIVILIANS. THE COMPOUND IS SURROUNDED."*

Julian flinched, glancing toward the glass dome above. In that fraction of a second, Daniel moved.

He didn't run. He lunged directly into the line of fire, shielding Nora and Mia with his own body while driving his shoulder straight into Julian’s midsection. The gun discharged with an ear-splitting crack, the bullet shattering a marble bust of their grandfather on the mantlepiece.

Both brothers slammed violently against the grand banister—the reconstructed balustrade overlooking the two-story atrium below.

"You took everything from me!" Julian snarled, his fingers clawing at Daniel's eyes, trying to gouge them out with feral desperation. "Father loved you! Clara loved you! You were always the weak one, Daniel! You were supposed to die first!"

Daniel seized Julian's lapels, using his own momentum to twist his brother around. He pinned Julian against the scorched oak railing. Below them, thirty feet down, lay the jagged ruins of the burning conservatory floor, covered in broken glass, twisted steel rebar, and roaring flames.

"I didn't take anything from you, Julian," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a cold, lethal whisper that cut straight through the roar of the fire and the thrum of the helicopters. "You threw it all away the moment you decided a child's life was worth less than a ledger."

Julian looked down at the fiery abyss beneath him, his aristocratic arrogance finally shattering into pure, naked terror. "Daniel... Daniel, please. We're brothers. Clara wouldn't want this. Think of Clara!"

"Clara told me what you did," Daniel said, his eyes blazing with cold judgment. "And Clara knew I would protect our daughter."

With a sudden, violent shove, Daniel hurled Julian away from the railing—not over the edge into the fire, but hard onto the marble floor where four tactical FBI agents in full body armor burst through the terrace doors, their assault rifles raised.

"Suspect down! Secure him!" the lead agent barked, pinning Julian to the floor with three boots on his spine and snapping heavy titanium cuffs over his wrists.

Daniel collapsed to his knees, his breath coming in ragged, bloody gasps. Mia rushed forward, dropping to the floor beside him and pressing Nora into his arms. The little girl wrapped her hands around his ears, burying her face into his soot-caked neck.

"Daddy," Nora whimpered softly, her tiny body trembling against his chest. "Daddy, don't let go."

"Never, sweetheart," Daniel choked out, tears finally carving clean channels through the soot on his cheeks. "Never again."
