Chapter 18 - The Web of Sins

The room tilted. Daniel stood up so violently his chair crashed backward against the wall, rattling the glass medical cabinets.

"That's a lie!" Daniel roared, his hands balling into fists, his vision tunneling into crimson rage. "Clara’s parents were teachers from Vermont! I met them! I attended their funerals!"

"Paid actors, Daniel," a soft, broken voice spoke from the doorway.

Mia stood there, leaning against the doorframe, tears streaming down her pale face. In her hands, she held an old silver locket—the exact replica of the locket Clara had worn every single day until the day she died.

"Mia?" Daniel whispered, his voice cracking into fragments. "What are you talking about?"

"Clara found out three months before Nora was born," Mia wept, stepping into the room and closing the heavy door behind her. "She went to Zurich for a routine prenatal screening. The genetic markers... the doctors were horrified. They told Clara that Nora carried an extremely rare, hereditary genetic anomaly that could only occur through direct sibling lineage."

Daniel felt his knees buckle. He reached out, bracing his weight against the edge of Nora’s bed, staring at his sleeping daughter in profound, paralyzing horror.

"She didn't tell me," Daniel breathed, the agony crushing his ribcage like an iron vise. "Why didn't she tell me?!"

"Because she loved you more than her own soul!" Mia cried out, clutching the silver locket to her chest. "She knew that if the truth came out, our father’s estate would be invalidated, you would be ruined, and Nora would be branded a biological aberration! Julian discovered the secret first. That was how he blackmailed Clara! He told Clara that if she didn't sign over the European trust, he would leak the genetic records to the world press and destroy you publicly!"

"And Clara refused," Daniel realized, the pieces of the puzzle snapping together with terrifying, tragic clarity. "Clara refused to give him the money."

"She refused because the trust fund was the only thing that could pay for Nora’s experimental heart surgeries when she turns five!" Mia sobbed. "Clara chose to take the poison Vanessa gave her. She chose to die slowly so Julian wouldn't release the documents until Nora was safely in your custody! Clara sacrificed her life, Daniel! Not to save the money... but to save you from knowing the truth!"

Daniel dropped his head into his hands, a guttural, heartbroken scream tearing from his lungs. Every memory of his marriage, every kiss, every whispered promise on the balcony of Ashcroft Hall was suddenly stained with the grotesque sins of a father who had treated human lives like pawns on a corporate chessboard.

Suddenly, the heart monitor beside Nora's bed flatlined into a piercing, continuous tone.
