Chapter 6 - The Spider's Web Collapses

With Vanessa in federal custody, Daniel’s war was only half won. Julian Vance remained at large, and a cornered viper was twice as dangerous.

At 05:15 a.m., Terminal 4 at John F. Kennedy International Airport was cloaked in thick coastal fog. A sleek Gulfstream G650 sat on the tarmac of the private executive hangar, its twin jet engines spooling up with a low, menacing roar.

Julian Vance adjusted the collar of his bespoke cashmere overcoat, clutching an aluminum flight case containing three million dollars in untraceable international bearer bonds.

"Why isn’t she here yet?" Julian growled at the private pilot standing by the stairs. "I told her Pier 83 was a straight run."

"Tower just gave us our departure clearance, Mr. Vance," the pilot replied nervously, checking his watch. "The weather is closing in fast. If we don’t rotate in ten minutes, the port authority is grounding all non-commercial traffic due to wind shear."

Julian scowled, looking toward the security gates. "Forget her. The idiot probably got caught. Pull up the stairs and close the hatch."

"I wouldn’t do that if I were you, Julian."

A voice echoed through the vast, hollow hangar, slicing through the roar of the jet engines.

Julian spun around. Emerging from behind a fuel tanker were six tactical officers from the Port Authority and FBI, assault rifles held at the low-ready position.

Walking slowly behind them, leaning on a dark cane with his arm strapped against his chest, was Daniel Whitmore.

Julian’s face twisted into a mask of pure, bitter hatred. "Daniel. Look at you. Dragging your broken bones across the runway like a wounded dog."

"Step away from the aircraft, Julian," Daniel said calmly. "The flight plan has been canceled. The pilot’s license is suspended. And your offshore accounts in Zurich have been seized under federal anti-racketeering statutes."

Julian laughed—a harsh, manic sound. "You think you've won? You think locking me up brings Clara back? She died screaming in a burning Mercedes, Daniel! And Nora should have had her skull cracked open on the marble floor of Ashcroft Hall! You were five seconds too fast, brother. Five damn seconds!"

"I don't need five seconds," Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "I only needed one."

Julian suddenly reached into the pocket of his overcoat.

"Federal agents! Drop the weapon!" the tactical commander roared.

Julian whipped out a compact 9mm pistol, his eyes wild with desperate rage, aiming it squarely at Daniel’s chest. "If I go down, the Whitmore name dies with me!"

*CRACK!*

A single sniper shot echoed through the steel rafters of the hangar.

The bullet struck Julian’s right shoulder with pinpoint precision. The pistol flew from his hand, clattering across the wet concrete tarmac as Julian collapsed to his knees, screaming in agony as blood seeped through his thousand-dollar coat.

The FBI tactical team swarmed him in seconds, pinning him facedown on the runway and wrenching his arms behind his back.

Daniel walked forward, stopping inches from where his stepbrother lay in the dirt and rainwater.

"You took Clara from me," Daniel said, looking down at the man who had terrorized his family for years. "You tried to take my daughter. You will spend the rest of your miserable life in a maximum-security penitentiary, watching through a rusted window while Nora grows up to inherit every single thing you ever wanted."

Julian spat blood onto the tarmac, his eyes venomous. "You can't erase me, Daniel!"

May you like

"I already have," Daniel said, turning his back on him as the federal agents hauled Julian away into the flashing red-and-blue lights of the runway.
