Chapter 15 - The Trap Beneath the Ash

The heat was becoming unbearable, blistering the skin on Daniel's cheeks. But through the roar of the collapsing mansion, he heard the faint, muffled sound from beneath the iron cellar door: Nora was crying. Not a frantic wail, but the terrified, whimpering sob of a child calling for her father in the dark.

*"Daddy... Daddy, it’s hot..."*

That small, fragile voice acted on Daniel like a blast of pure adrenaline.

Ignoring the steel blade biting into his trachea, Daniel swept his leg outward with brutal force, catching Julian’s uninjured knee. The bone snapped with a sickening crunch. Julian shrieked in agony, his balance collapsing as he crashed into the marble floor, the remote detonator flying from his grip and sliding into the roaring flames of a fallen sofa.

"The remote!" Julian screamed, clawing frantically across the burning rugs. "You fool, you've doomed us all!"

Daniel didn't care about the remote. He surged to his feet, ignoring the searing pain in his bruised ribs, and threw his entire body against the two-ton grand piano blocking the cellar hatch.

His muscles tore; the soles of his boots melted against the scorching marble. With a primal, animalistic roar that tore through his vocal cords, Daniel shoved the massive mahogany instrument three inches. Then six inches. With one final, desperate heave fueled by the memory of Clara’s gentle smile, he overturned the grand piano onto its side. It crashed into the flames with a discordant, thundering cacophony of snapping steel strings.

Daniel ripped the iron cellar door open.

Thick smoke immediately billowed out of the subterranean darkness, followed by Mia, who emerged coughing violently, clutching Nora wrapped tightly inside a wet wool blanket against her chest.

"Daniel!" Mia gasped, her face blackened by soot, her eyes streaming tears. "The back tunnel is blocked! Julian's men collapsed the foundation!"

"Take her! Go to the front terrace!" Daniel yelled, grabbing Nora and kissing her soot-stained forehead. The little girl clung to his neck, her tiny arms locking around him with absolute, desperate strength. "I have you, baby. Daddy has you."

"Nobody leaves!"

Julian Whitmore stood swaying in the burning doorway, dragged upright by sheer, unadulterated madness. In his right hand, he held a sleek, nickel-plated revolver aimed directly at Nora's head. Blood was pouring from his broken leg, his suit was smoldering, but his eyes were wide, vacant, and utterly murderous.

"Give me the girl, Daniel," Julian whispered, cocking the hammer. "Or her blood will be on your hands before this roof collapses on all of us."
