Chapter 17 - The Ghost in the Documents

Forty-eight hours later, the private intensive care wing of Manhattan Presbyterian Hospital was heavily guarded by federal marshals. Julian Whitmore was chained to his bed down the hall under twenty-four-hour suicide watch, his broken leg set in surgical steel pins, awaiting trial for treason, multiple counts of attempted murder, and corporate conspiracy.
In a quiet corner room, Nora slept soundly, her lungs cleared of smoke, clutching a soft stuffed bear Mia had bought from the hospital gift shop.
Arthur Sterling sat in a leather armchair beside the window, his briefcase open on his lap, looking ten years older. He adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses and slid a thick, red-stamped dossier across the table to Daniel.
"We finished decrypting the private server Julian kept in his safe house in the Hamptons," Arthur said quietly, his voice laced with profound exhaustion. "Daniel... what we found goes far beyond corporate embezzlement."
Daniel looked up from Nora's bedside, his eyes dark with suspicion. "What else could there possibly be, Arthur? Vanessa is in solitary. Julian is facing three consecutive life terms. It’s over."
"It's not over," Arthur replied, pulling out a faded document bearing an official seal from the Swiss Department of Justice dated twenty-five years ago. "Look at the original birth registry for the Whitmore estate."
Daniel frowned, picking up the paper. His eyes scanned the yellowed German and French text, until they locked onto two names at the bottom of the page.
*Child 1: Julian Whitmore.*
*Child 2: Daniel Whitmore.*
*Status: Fraternal Twins.*
Daniel froze. "Twins? Julian is four years older than me. That was on his birth certificate. That’s what our parents told the world."
"It was a fabrication," Arthur said gravely. "Your father manipulated the public records to create an undisputed sole heir to satisfy the ancient charter of the Whitmore Maritime Trust. Julian was born seven minutes before you. But there was a third child, Daniel."
Daniel looked up, the air freezing in his chest. "A third child?"
"A triplet," Arthur said, his hand trembling slightly as he pulled out a second document. "A sister. Born with a severe congenital heart defect. Your father considered her an embarrassment to the family's public image. He paid an astronomical bribe to a private clinic in Zurich to have her quietly adopted away to an American family in upstate New York."
"Who was she, Arthur?" Daniel demanded, a dreadful, sickening intuition rising like bile in the back of his throat. "Who did she grow up to be?"

Arthur looked toward the hospital bed where Nora slept, then turned his gaze toward the door.
"Her adopted name was Clara," Arthur whispered. "Clara Evans. The woman you married... was your sister."
