Chapter 4 - Missing in the Black Rain

The rain over New York City turned into a blinding, torrential downpour. Outside the gilded iron gates of the Manhattan boutique hotel, unmarked police cruisers sat silently, their windshield wipers slashing through the gloom.
In penthouse suite 1402, Vanessa Whitmore stood in front of a full-length mirror, frantically pulling a black cashmere turtleneck over her head. Her hands shook violently. She had cut her long dark hair into a rough, chin-length bob over the bathroom sink, dying it an ashen blonde with boxed chemicals that burned her scalp.
"Pick up the damn phone, Julian!" she hissed into the burner device pressed against her ear.
"I’m here," a cold, aristocratic voice answered from the other end. "Keep your voice down. The entire East Coast is crawling with state troopers looking for a woman with a torn burgundy gown."
"He caught her, Julian!" Vanessa panicked, tears streaking her pale face. "Do you hear me? Daniel caught the brat out of the air! She didn't hit the floor!"
A long, suffocating silence hung on the line. When Julian spoke again, his voice was laced with murderous contempt. "He caught a child falling from a three-story mezzanine? Are you out of your mind?"
"I saw it with my own eyes! And the camera... Daniel put a new surveillance feed in the ceiling. It recorded everything! My face, my words, the push. They have it all, Julian! The bank froze the sixteen million! We have nothing!"
"Calm down," Julian ordered sharply. "The money in the Cayman account is locked, but I still have three million in bearer bonds in the diplomatic locker at JFK. Our private jet leaves for Buenos Aires at 06:00. The pilot is paid in full and asks no questions."
"I can’t get to JFK! Every bridge and tunnel will have roadblocks!"
"You won’t take the bridge. Go to the marina at Pier 83. My associates have a private launch waiting to take you across to New Jersey, where a transport team will drive you straight onto the tarmac." Julian paused, his tone shifting into chilling intimacy. "You did what you had to do, Vanessa. Once we reach Argentina, Daniel can hold all the surveillance tapes he wants. He will never touch us."
"You swear it?" Vanessa sobbed, clutching her designer bag filled with stacks of cash and fake passports. "You won't leave me behind?"
"Have I ever failed you, darling? Remember what we did to Clara. We made him weep once. We can outsmart him again. Now move. The boat leaves in twenty minutes."
The line went dead.
Vanessa exhaled shakily, grabbing her black trench coat and large sunglasses. She slipped through the service elevator of the hotel, emerging into the dark, damp alleyway where a black town car was idling with its wipers thrashing against the storm.
She opened the rear passenger door and slid onto the leather seat, panting. "Pier 83. Fast."
The driver did not answer. He did not put the car into gear.
"I said drive, damn you!" Vanessa snapped, reaching for the partition.
A click echoed through the dark cabin. The central locks engaged. The partition slid down smoothly.
In the passenger seat turned around to face her, sat Detective Marcus Vance.
Beside him, emerging from the dark shadows of the rear window next to her, was Daniel Whitmore, his arm bound in a sling, his eyes as cold and unforgiving as a graveyard headstone.

"Good evening, Vanessa," Daniel whispered.
