Chapter 14 - The Bloodline Fracture

The revelation struck Marcus with the force of a physical blow, but his face remained an immovable wall of stone. He did not lower the weapon.
"Victoria had an infant before we met," Marcus said, his tone devoid of shock, dissecting the information in real time. "Her family claimed the child was stillborn in a private clinic in Munich."
"A lie bought with Sterling money," Cassandra laughed, a shrill, manic sound that bounced off the rusted steel containers. "Richard Sterling couldn't let his pristine, billionaire heiress enter high society with a bastard son fathered by a common criminal. So the child was discarded. Put into the system under a blank certificate. And when my sweet, pathetic sister Elena died in that Swiss clinic after delivering your true son... I made a trade."
"You swapped the infants," Marcus whispered, the horror finally sinking its claws into his spine.
"Not me alone," Cassandra said, taking a step back into the shadow, raising both hands to show they were empty. "Dr. Aris Thorne handled the transport. We took your real son—the legitimate heir to the Vance fortune—and we buried him where you will never find him. And we put Victoria’s discarded brat into Elena’s bassinet. We knew that sooner or later, Victoria's greed would bring her to your door. We knew she would marry you, look at that boy every day, and never realize she was trying to destroy her own flesh and blood!"
The cruelty of the scheme was monstrous. It was a labyrinth of psychological warfare designed not just to kill, but to turn a family into cannibalistic instruments of their own destruction. Victoria had spent months torturing, drugging, and finally attempting to crush a three-year-old boy under a five-hundred-pound slab of sugar and iron... completely unaware that the boy was the son she had mourned four years prior.
"Why tell me now?" Marcus asked, his finger tightening on the trigger. "Victoria is in a cage. Her father is rotting in the ground. The Sterling empire is dust. What do you gain by telling me the boy isn't mine?"
Cassandra tilted her head, her dark eyes flashing with unhinged triumph. "Because, Marcus... the DNA test Dr. Wallace is running right now? It won't just confirm that Leo isn't Elena's child. It will confirm he shares fifty percent of his genetic markers with *Victoria Sterling*. The media already has the leak. In two hours, the entire world will know that Marcus Vance—the titan of tech, the untouchable oligarch—has been raising the bastard son of the woman who tried to murder him."
"And while you're drowning in the scandal, while the board of Vance Global strips your voting shares because of the fraud..." Cassandra took another step backward, disappearing into the thick shadow of a shipping crane. "Your real son will be sold to the highest bidder at an auction in Macau."
Marcus lunged forward, closing the distance in an explosion of speed, but Cassandra didn't run. She dropped a small silver cylinder onto the concrete.
*Flashbang.*
A blinding wall of magnesium light and an ear-splitting, concussive boom detonated between them. Marcus shielded his eyes instinctively, his ears ringing with high-frequency agony, his body rolling behind an iron stanchion to avoid incoming fire.
When the smoke cleared three seconds later, the platform was empty. Only the shattered porcelain doll remained, its painted blue eye staring blankly up at the swinging yellow bulb.
Marcus’s phone buzzed violently in his breast pocket. He ripped it out, blinking through the purple spots swimming in his vision.
May you like
It was Nathan. His voice was frantic, breaking through heavy static.
"Marcus! Get back to the estate right now! Dr. Wallace... he's dead!"
