Chapter 3 - Poison in the Vanilla

The crowd gasped in unison. Hurling an object at Marcus Vance was unthinkable; doing it while he held his injured child was an act of madness.

Marcus didn't flinch.

With lightning reflexes honed by years of martial arts training, Marcus tilted his head just an inch to the side. The heavy mass of cake sailed past his ear, missing Leo entirely, and struck the stone pillar behind them with a wet, explosive splat.

Victoria stood frozen, her chest heaving, her hands covered in sticky blue and gold frosting, suddenly realizing the fatal line she had just crossed.

Marcus’s eyes didn’t blink. His expression was as cold and unyielding as granite. With his free right hand, he didn't strike her—he would never lower himself to hit a woman—instead, he reached out and grabbed the edge of the overturned iron cart’s shattered oak display platform.

With a single, terrifying surge of raw adrenaline and strength, Marcus shoved the heavy wreckage forward.

The remains of the collapsed iron cart, along with several gallons of liquefied frosting, shattered tiers, and heavy sugar foundations, slid across the slick travertine tiles like a tidal wave of sludge. The heavy iron frame caught Victoria directly across the shins, sweeping her off her feet.

"Aaaah!"

Victoria let out an ungraceful, shrill yelp as she fell backward, landing dead-center into the mountain of crushed cake, smashed sugar sculptures, and red berry coulis she had weaponized against a three-year-old. Her five-thousand-dollar Dior silk gown was instantly ruined, soaked in greasy cream, sugar, and dirt. Her elaborate chignon unraveled, sending strands of blonde hair plastered across her face in thick, sticky clumps.

She sat there in the wreckage of her own making, looking like a deranged, defeated clown while the entire high society of California watched in stunned, disgusted silence.

"Frank," Marcus spoke without even looking down at the pathetic creature at his feet. His voice was steady, freezing, and lethal.

"Yes, Mr. Vance?" The head of security stepped forward immediately.

"Lock the gates. Nobody leaves this estate until the police and my private forensics team arrive. And remove this garbage from my sight. If she takes one step toward my son, put her in zip-ties."

"Understood, sir."

Marcus turned his back on Victoria without another word, sprinting toward the private medical pavilion located in the west wing of the estate. Behind him, the sound of Victoria screaming profanities and sobbing hysterically was quickly drowned out by the approaching sirens of the Vance private medical team.

Inside the sterile, state-of-the-art medical suite on the ground floor, Dr. Julian Kensington, Marcus’s personal physician, was already waiting with two pediatric nurses.

"Get him on the table! Carefully!" Dr. Kensington ordered, gloves snapping onto his hands.

Marcus placed Leo onto the examination bed, his hands lingering on his son’s tiny chest. "He took a direct blow to the head from the structural dowel. And he swallowed some of that damn cake. Check his breathing, Julian. It sounds raspy. Too raspy for just crying."

Dr. Kensington immediately began wiping Leo’s face with antiseptic wipes, gently probing the three-inch gash on the toddler’s temple. "The head wound is superficial, Marcus. It will need five or six stitches, but there’s no skull depression. We will do a rapid CT scan to rule out a subdural hematoma. But listen to his lungs..."

Kensington pressed his stethoscope against Leo’s chest. The doctor’s face instantly changed. His eyebrows shot up, his expression morphing from focused calm to intense alarm.

"He's wheezing. Severe bronchial constriction," Kensington said rapidly. "Marcus, did the cake contain any known allergens? Peanuts? Tree nuts?"

"No!" Marcus answered fiercely. "I personally reviewed the baker's manifest three times! Leo has a mild sensitivity to almond extract, but I forbade any nuts or extracts on the entire property! The bakery was given strict orders: pure vanilla, butter, flour, sugar. Nothing else!"

"Nurse, get me 0.15 milligrams of epinephrine, now!" Dr. Kensington yelled, grabbing an autoinjector. "His airway is swelling shut. Look at his lips—they’re turning cyanotic!"

Marcus watched in absolute horror as his son’s lips began to take on a faint bluish tint. Leo’s little hands clawed at his throat, his eyes rolling back slightly as he struggled to pull oxygen into his lungs.

"Leo! Look at Daddy! Stay with me, buddy!" Marcus grabbed his son’s tiny hands, tears finally breaking through the billionaire's stoic exterior. "Julian, do something!"

Kensington jammed the needle into the toddler’s outer thigh. Within seconds, the epinephrine took effect. Leo let out a long, shuddering gasp, his chest expanding as the airways reopened. He began to cry again—a weak, exhausted cry, but it was the sound of life.

Kensington quickly swabbed a sample of the blue frosting still clinging to Leo’s chin and dropped it into a rapid-testing chemical vial. He shook the vial, watching the color change from clear to a deep, toxic purple.

Kensington looked up at Marcus, his face pale as a sheet.

"This isn't almond extract, Marcus," Kensington whispered, his voice trembling with gravity. "This is concentrated peanut oil and a high dosage of synthesized potassium bromide. Someone didn't just want the cart to crush him... Marcus, someone poisoned this cake."
