Chapter 6 - The Spider's Web

The arrest of Victoria Sterling Vance should have brought an immediate sense of peace to the Vance estate, but as the clock struck 3:00 AM, Marcus Vance knew the battle had only just begun. The wealthy do not go quietly into the night; they summon legions of white-collar mercenaries to burn down the truth.

Marcus sat behind the massive obsidian desk in his private library, illuminated only by the green glow of three high-security monitors and a single brass banker's lamp. Across from him sat David Ross, the most ruthless criminal litigation attorney on the West Coast, a man Marcus kept on an astronomical monthly retainer specifically for catastrophic contingencies.

"The Sterling family has already made their first move," David said, sliding a tablet across the dark stone. "Richard Sterling didn't even wait for the sun to rise. At 1:30 AM, an emergency injunction was filed with a corrupt appellate judge in Sacramento to suppress the evidence gathered at the party."

Marcus’s eyes darkened. "On what grounds?"

"Unlawful detention and chain-of-custody violations," David replied grimly. "They're claiming your private security forces acted as an illegal militia, holding Victoria hostage and tampering with the cake cart before the LAPD arrived. They're arguing that the potassium bromide found in the frosting was planted by your own staff to frame her because you wanted out of the prenuptial agreement without paying the fifty-million-dollar exit clause."

Marcus let out a dry, humorless laugh that sent chills through the room. "They think this is about money. They truly cannot comprehend that someone would burn their world down simply out of love for a child."

"Furthermore," David continued, "the media machine has been activated. Look at Twitter and the major tabloids."

Marcus glanced at the screen. Headlines were already popping up across digital news outlets with manufactured speed:

*TRAGEDY AT VANCE ESTATE: BILLIONAIRE MARCUS VANCE VIOLENTLY ATTACKS SOCIALITE WIFE AFTER FREAK POOLSIDE ACCIDENT.*

*SOURCES CLAIM TYCOON'S PARANOIA SPIRALING FOLLOWING UNSTABLE BEHAVIOR.*

*EXCLUSIVE: VICTORIA VANCE INJURED AFTER BEING SHATTERED INTO GLASS AND IRON BY RAGING HUSBAND.*

Attached to the articles were blurry, carefully cropped photographs taken by one of the party guests—likely an operative placed by the Sterlings. The photos showed Marcus towering over Victoria, looking monstrous and enraged, with Victoria cowering on the ground covered in cake, looking like a battered victim. There was no image of little Leo pinned beneath the iron cart. There was no image of the blood running down the three-year-old’s face.

"They're controlling the narrative," Marcus observed, his voice eerily level.

"They're trying to sway public opinion before the arraignment on Monday," David warned. "If they make you look like an abusive, deranged billionaire who assaulted his glamorous wife over a dropped birthday cake, the judge will grant bail on sympathetic grounds. Once Victoria is out on bail, she’ll be on a private jet to a non-extradition country within twelve hours. The Sterling family has extensive assets in the United Arab Emirates and Switzerland."

Marcus leaned back into his leather chair, steepled his fingers, and closed his eyes. In the quiet of the room, he could hear the faint sound of the ocean waves crashing against the cliffs five hundred feet below the estate.

"Where is the mechanic, Frank?" Marcus asked, not opening his eyes.

Frank Davies, who had been standing silently by the door like a shadow, stepped forward. "Thomas Vance fled his apartment in Glendale two hours ago. Victoria’s brother, Julian Sterling, arranged a safe house for him near the Port of Long Beach. They're planning to smuggle him out on a container ship bound for Panama tomorrow evening."

Marcus’s eyes snapped open. The cold fury inside them was terrifyingly clear.

"They think they can play chess with me," Marcus murmured. "They think because they have old-money pedigree and political friends, they can poison my son, butcher my wife, and smear my name across the gutter."

Marcus stood up, buttoning a fresh black charcoal suit jacket.

"David," Marcus instructed, "prepare a counter-filing. Release the unedited, four-K ultra-high-definition surveillance footage from the patio directly to every major news network and independent investigative journalist in the country simultaneously. Do not redact the moment she deliberately pushed the cart. Let the world see her smile before she shoved two hundred pounds of steel onto a three-year-old."

"And the chemical analysis of the frosting?" David asked, a razor-thin smile touching his lips.

"Attach the toxicology report from Dr. Kensington, co-signed by the head of pathology at UCLA Medical Center," Marcus said coldly. "And leak the transaction records showing the shell corporation payments to the mechanic. Let the Sterling empire drown in the court of public opinion before breakfast."

"Consider it done," David said, already typing furiously on his encrypted terminal.

Marcus turned to Frank. "Take a tactical team to Long Beach. I don't want the mechanic dead, Frank. I want him breathing, terrified, and singing like a canary. If a single hair on his head is harmed by the Sterlings before he talks to Detective Miller, you will answer to me."

"He'll be in an LAPD interrogation room by dawn, Mr. Vance," Frank promised with a curt nod.

"Good," Marcus said, walking toward the exit. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a hospital visit to make. The Sterling family thinks they can silence this family. It's time I remind them why my company's emblem is an iron anchor."
