Chapter 7 - The Hostile Takeover

By 7:00 AM, the city of Los Angeles woke up to a digital earthquake.

The unedited surveillance video released by Marcus Vance had obliterated the Sterling family's manufactured narrative within minutes. Over eighty million people watched in horrified fascination as Victoria Sterling Vance—clad in pristine Dior silk—carefully positioned herself behind the massive iron cart, waited until the child was directly in the impact zone, and shoved it with unmistakable, vicious intent.

The internet erupted. The public outrage was immediate, deafening, and absolute. The hashtag #JusticeForLeo trended number one worldwide. Protestors were already beginning to gather outside the Sterling family’s historic mansion in Hancock Park, carrying signs demanding no bail for the "Cinderella Stepmother."

Meanwhile, inside the presidential suite of Cedars-Sinai Pediatric Hospital, Marcus Vance sat beside his son’s bed. Leo was awake, eating small spoonfuls of organic apple sauce fed to him by Clara. The swelling on the little boy’s forehead had gone down, covered by a neat, sterile dressing, though faint purple bruises still circled his collarbone where the cart’s edge had caught him.

"Papa?" Leo whispered, his big hazel eyes looking up at Marcus with complete innocence.

"Yes, my brave boy?" Marcus took Leo’s tiny hand, kissing his knuckles with infinite tenderness.

"Are we gonna have cake again?" the child asked softly. "The big cake was loud. It made me dark."

Marcus felt a sharp, agonizing twist in his chest. A lesser man would have broken down in tears, but Marcus merely smiled softly, his thumb stroking his son's cheek. "No more big cakes, Leo. Next time, Daddy will bake cookies with you in the kitchen. Just you and me. No carts. No noise. Okay?"

"Okay," Leo mumbled, a tiny smile returning to his lips before his eyelids grew heavy from the medication. Within minutes, the toddler was asleep again, his breathing smooth and rhythmic.

Marcus stood up, kissed his son's forehead, and walked out into the private corridor.

Outside the suite, four armed private security contractors and two LAPD officers stood guard. Waiting on the leather benches down the hall were three men in tailored Italian suits: the executive board members of Sterling Capital, the primary investment firm owned by Victoria’s father, Richard Sterling.

Leading them was Richard Sterling himself.

Richard was seventy-two years old, with silver hair, aristocratic poise, and the arrogant sneer of a man who had spent his entire life believing the laws of common men did not apply to his lineage. But today, that sneer was fractured by exhaustion and panic.

"Marcus," Richard said, stepping forward, his voice strained. "We need to talk. In private."

Marcus didn't move. He stood in the middle of the hallway like a stone pillar, towering over the older man. "You have thirty seconds, Richard. And you better pray your next words are an apology, though even that won't save you."

Richard’s face flushed with indignant rage, though he kept his voice down to avoid the hospital staff's attention. "You have gone entirely too far, Marcus! Leaking that video? Releasing financial records to the press? You are destroying my daughter's life! You are destroying our family name!"

"Your daughter tried to murder my son," Marcus said, each word landing like a sledgehammer. "And she murdered Elena."

Richard flinched. The reaction was subtle, but to a man like Marcus, it was an outright confession. Richard had known. The entire Sterling family had known what Victoria did to Elena to secure the Vance fortune.

"You have no proof of that outrageous slander!" Richard hissed. "Elena’s death was an accident! If you continue this crusade, Marcus, Sterling Capital will dump all fifty million shares of Vance Enterprises we hold in our hedge fund! We will trigger a short-squeeze that will drop your stock price thirty percent by market open! You will lose billions!"

Marcus looked at the old man with a gaze of absolute, chilling amusement.

He pulled a thin gold smartphone from his pocket and pressed a button, putting it on speaker.

"David," Marcus spoke into the phone.

"Yes, Marcus," David Ross's voice came through crystal clear. "The transaction is complete. The New York Stock Exchange just opened."

Marcus kept his eyes locked on Richard Sterling. "Tell Mr. Sterling what happened while he was riding the elevator up to this floor."

"With pleasure," David replied smoothly. "At 6:45 AM, Vance Enterprises executed an emergency leveraged buyout of Sterling Capital's primary debt facilities through our holding company in London. We purchased your defaulted real estate bonds for forty cents on the dollar, Richard. As of eight minutes ago, Vance Enterprises owns fifty-one percent of your company's outstanding credit lines. We have called the notes due immediately."

Richard Sterling’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror. He grabbed the lapels of his own coat as if having a heart attack. "You... you can't do that! That requires board approval!"

"I am your board now, Richard," Marcus said softly, his voice dropping into that terrifying baritone. "Sterling Capital is bankrupt. Your hedge fund is being seized by federal regulators as we speak for illegal short-selling and money laundering tied to the offshore accounts used to pay Thomas Vance."

"Thomas...?" Richard choked, his knees giving out. One of his vice presidents had to grab his arm to keep him from collapsing onto the linoleum floor.

"Frank Davies found your mechanic in Long Beach an hour ago," Marcus whispered, stepping directly into Richard’s personal space until the old man could smell the cold mint on Marcus’s breath. "He gave Detective Miller a full, signed confession. He named Victoria. And he named you, Richard. He testified that you authorized the payment from the family trust."

Marcus tapped the older man’s chest with one stiff finger.

"Your daughter will spend the rest of her life in Chowchilla Women's Prison. And you, Richard, will spend your golden years in a federal penitentiary. When I am finished with your family, the name Sterling will be nothing more than a cautionary tale whispered by people who think they can touch a Vance and survive."

Marcus turned to the two LAPD officers standing by the door.

"Officers," Marcus pointed at Richard Sterling. "Arrest this man. Detective Miller has an active federal warrant for conspiracy to commit capital murder."

The officers stepped forward, clicking their handcuffs free. As the steel snapped around Richard Sterling’s wrists, the once-mighty patriarch began to tremble, weeping openly in the hospital hallway as other patients and nurses looked on in silent awe.

Marcus didn't watch him fall. He turned back around, opened the door to the quiet suite, and returned to his son's side.
