Chapter 16 - The Ghost’s Ledger

By sunrise, the Vance estate was an armed fortress. Two dozen tier-one private military contractors patrolled the perimeter with assault rifles, while federal authorities were kept strictly outside the gates by Marcus's personal legal armada.
Marcus sat at the long mahogany table in the private dining room. Leo had finally fallen asleep in the adjacent sitting room, guarded personally by Nathan and three heavily armed bodyguards.
On the table before Marcus sat the only item that had survived the destruction of Dr. Wallace’s laboratory: a charred, heat-resistant digital hard drive recovered from the primary sequencing machine.
Beside it lay a file that had just been couriered from the maximum-security federal facility in Chino—the prison records of Victoria Sterling.
Marcus stared at the prison file. Victoria had spent the last twelve months in near-catatonic silence, refusing visitors, refusing legal counsel, existing like a ghost waiting for execution. But three weeks ago, she had received a visitor. A woman claiming to be a representative from the Swiss Red Cross.
The visitor’s log showed a signature: *Elena Vance.*
Marcus plugged the recovered hard drive into his personal satellite terminal. The digital forensics team had managed to salvage 40% of Dr. Wallace's final analysis before the incendiary blast had destroyed the lab.
The screen flickered, lines of code racing across the display before resolving into a side-by-side genetic comparison.
Marcus’s eyes scanned the markers.
*CHILD TEST SUBJECT (LEO):*
- Paternal Match (Marcus Vance): 0.00%
- Maternal Match (Elena Vance): 0.00%
- Maternal Match (Victoria Sterling): 99.87%
The air inside the room turned to liquid nitrogen.
Cassandra hadn't lied about Leo's mother. The boy sleeping twenty feet away, the boy Marcus had raised, the boy who called him "Daddy" with absolute adoration, was biologically the son of Victoria Sterling—the sociopath who had tried to crush him beneath five hundred pounds of iron and sugar.
Marcus leaned back in his chair, his hands flat against the mahogany table. Any other man would have broken. Any other billionaire would have called child services, purged the boy from the family registry, and wiped his hands of the corruption.
Then Marcus remembered the sound of Leo’s laughter on the lawn yesterday. He remembered the boy clutching his leg during the darkest nights of Victoria's abuse, whispering, *“I’m safe with you, Daddy.”*
Marcus’s face settled into an expression of cold, terrifying resolve.
"Genes mean nothing," he said aloud to the empty room. "You are my son because I chose you. And I will burn the world to the ground to keep you safe."
He tapped the keyboard, opening the second salvaged file on the drive. It was the preliminary report Dr. Wallace had pulled from the Swiss clinic’s encrypted archives before the server had been purged.
The file contained a live tracking signal.
When Elena’s true child had been taken four years ago, Dr. Wallace had secretly implanted a medical-grade micro-transponder into the infant’s left femur—a prototype tracking chip Marcus's medical division had been developing for pediatric surgery. The signal was designed to remain dormant until activated by a specific military-grade radio frequency.
Dr. Wallace had activated it thirty seconds before he was murdered.
The satellite screen zoomed out, leaving California behind, crossing the Atlantic, moving through Europe, and centering on a small, fortified island off the coast of Dubrovnik, Croatia.

The transponder was active.
The legitimate heir of Marcus Vance was alive.
