Chapter 20 - The Blood Debt

"What are you talking about?" Marcus demanded, stepping forward, his tactical gear heavy on his shoulders. "Victoria is in maximum security in California! She will die in that cage!"
Elena reached into her jacket and pulled out a burning-red priority dispatch from the United States Department of Justice, tossing it at Marcus's feet.
Marcus picked up the tablet. The screen displayed a live news feed from Sacramento, California:
*BREAKING NEWS: GOVERNOR ISSUES EMERGENCY COMMUTATION FOR VICTORIA STERLING FOLLOWING EXPLOSIVE NEW DNA EVIDENCE PRESENTED BY FORMER US ATTORNEYS.*
*CONVICTION OVERTURNED: COURT RULES VICTORIA STERLING WAS THE VICTIM OF EXTENSIVE COERCION AND FRAUD PERPETRATED BY HER LATE FATHER AND DR. ARIS THORNE.*
*VICTORIA STERLING HAS BEEN OFFICIALLY RELEASED FROM CHINO CORRECTIONAL FACILITY AS OF 03:00 PST.*
Marcus’s vision blurred with white-hot rage. "How? How could any judge sign this?"
"Because Thorne left a dead-man's switch with the federal courts," Elena said, her voice cold as ice. "A full confession clearing Victoria of the primary conspiracy, framing her as an innocent victim who was drugged and manipulated. And more importantly... Thorne filed an emergency maternal custody petition on her behalf."
Elena stepped closer to Marcus, her eyes burning into his soul.
"Right now, Marcus... Victoria has an army of federal marshals and international child recovery agents heading to your safehouse in Zurich. She isn't just free. She has a court order granting her immediate, full custody of the boy you call Leo."
Marcus’s phone screamed in his hand.
It was Clara.
The audio feed was flooded with the deafening roar of tactical sirens, the crack of flashbangs, and the sound of breaking glass.
"Marcus! They’re inside the perimeter!" Clara screamed through the static, her voice shrill with terror. "Federal agents! They have a court order from the Swiss magistrate! They're taking Leo! They’re putting him in a black van!"
"Clara! Put Nathan on!" Marcus roared into the phone, his heart feeling as though it were being torn from his ribs.
A different voice answered the line.
Smooth. Chilled. Drenched in victorious, venomous malice.
"Hello, Marcus darling," Victoria Sterling purred through the speaker.
Marcus could hear Leo screaming hysterically in the background: *"Daddy! Daddy, help me! Don't let the bad lady touch me!"*
"You took my family's empire, Marcus," Victoria whispered, her breath hot against the receiver. "You put me in a cage. But now... I have my son back. And if you ever want to see this little bastard alive again... you will bring Elena and her real child to the tarmac at Geneva Airport in two hours."
The call cut out with a dead, hollow tone.
Marcus stood frozen in the center of the ancient fortress, the storm howling through the shattered stained glass, with his real wife and his real son standing behind him... while the boy who held his soul was being dragged into the dark by the woman who had tried to murder him.
Elena looked at him, her face completely pale. "What are you going to do, Marcus?"
Marcus slowly raised his head. His eyes were no longer those of a billionaire, or a husband, or a titan of industry.
They were the eyes of a monster who had just been given nothing left to lose.
"Nathan," Marcus commanded into the open comms channel, his voice dropping into an unnatural, terrifying calm. "Prepare the war room. We are not going to Geneva to negotiate."

He racked the slide of his rifle, his gaze locking onto the dark horizon over the Adriatic.
"We are going to war."
