Chapter 2 - The Lion Awakens

The scream pierced the ambient hum of the party like a siren in the dead of night. Glasses shattered on the flagstones as socialites gasped in horror. Several women screamed, covering their mouths, while waitstaff dropped their trays in shock.

"Oh, my God! It slipped! The brake gave out!" Victoria wailed instantly, raising her hands to her cheeks in an exaggerated display of grief and shock. She took two steps backward, deliberately keeping herself clean from the mess, her eyes darting across the lawn to gauge the guests’ reactions. "Someone help him! The cart rolled!"

Before anyone could move, the heavy glass French doors of the mansion’s west wing burst open with the force of an explosion.

Marcus Vance moved like a force of nature.

He stood six-foot-three, broad-shouldered, with an aura of raw, terrifying authority that commanded corporate boardrooms and international courts alike. He had discarded his suit jacket; his white shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, sleeves rolled to his forearms. The moment the sound of his son’s scream had hit his ears through the double-paned glass, every instinct in his body had shifted into primal survival mode.

Marcus crossed the fifty yards of open terrace in seconds, his polished leather shoes practically scorching the stone.

"LEO!"

His voice was a seismic roar that shook the very foundation of the patio. Guests parted like the Red Sea, stumbling over deck chairs to get out of his path.

When Marcus reached the wreckage, his heart stopped.

Beneath the crushed tiers of cake, broken iron struts, and shattered platters, Leo was pinned. Thick, suffocating layers of heavy cream covered the child's face, blocking his tiny nostrils and mouth. Blood seeped through the white frosting from a jagged laceration near his temple where a wooden support dowel had struck him. His little chest was heaving in desperate, choking gasps.

"Papa... Papa..." the boy choked, the sound muffled by buttercream and blood.

Marcus fell to his knees directly into the carnage, caring nothing for his thousand-dollar trousers or the jagged shards of porcelain digging into his skin. His massive hands, usually steady enough to sign billion-dollar contracts without a tremor, shook violently as he threw aside the heavy iron tray and dug his fingers into the dense sugar.

"I’m here, Leo! Daddy’s here!" Marcus bellowed, his voice cracking with an unbearable blend of panic and heartbreak.

He scooped his son into his arms, pulling him out of the debris with ferocious care. The boy’s tiny body was trembling uncontrollably, cold and sticky, shivering with shock. Marcus immediately used his own silk tie to wipe the thick frosting away from Leo’s eyes, nose, and mouth, clearing his airways. He pressed his forehead against Leo’s bloody temple, feeling the rapid, frantic flutter of his son’s pulse.

"Call Dr. Kensington now!" Marcus roared at his chief of security, Frank Davies, who was already running toward them with a medical trauma kit. "Get a pediatric trauma unit here in five minutes, or I will buy the hospital and fire every doctor on staff!"

"Right away, Mr. Vance!" Frank barked into his radio.

Leo buried his face into Marcus’s neck, clutching his father’s shirt with trembling, sticky fingers, sobbing hysterically. "Hot... it hurts, Papa... Stepmom pushed... she pushed the big thing..."

The words were soft, spoken between gasps of tears, but in the dead silence of the horrified crowd, they rang out like gunshots.

Marcus froze. Every muscle in his massive frame went rigid.

Slowly, almost mechanically, Marcus lifted his head. The panic and terror that had consumed his face moments before drained away, replaced by something far more dangerous: a freezing, apocalyptic rage.

He looked up at Victoria.

Victoria was standing just three feet away, still clutching her chest, her breathing shallow, but her eyes held a flicker of cold, defensive calculation. When she met Marcus’s gaze, she felt a chill run straight down her spine that made her knees buckle. She had seen Marcus ruin competitors; she had seen him dismantle powerful dynasties without blinking. But she had never seen him look at a human being the way he was looking at her right now.

"Marcus, darling, it was a terrible accident!" Victoria stammered, stepping forward, her voice trembling with false emotion. "The patio has an incline, and the wheels... the lock must have broken! I tried to catch it, I swear to God I tried—"

Marcus stood up slowly, cradling his weeping son against his chest with his left arm, while his right hand balled into a fist so tight his knuckles turned ghostly white.

He took one step toward her. The sheer pressure of his presence forced Victoria to stumble back half a step.

"Do not speak his mother’s name," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying baritone that was far worse than shouting. "And do not dare lie to me."

"Marcus, please! Everyone saw! I was standing right there—"

"WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO MY SON?!" Marcus’s roar tore through the air with such visceral, unbridled fury that several guests jumped in fright. His dark eyes drilled into hers with the intensity of a blast furnace. "You were standing behind the handles, Victoria! His cart doesn’t move unless someone releases the dual mechanical clamp on the rear axle! I designed that damn cart myself!"

The color drained completely from Victoria’s face. She had forgotten that Marcus was an engineer before he was a financier; he personally inspected every mechanical element brought onto his estate for his son’s safety.

Realizing the facade of the doting stepmother was crumbling in front of the entire elite of Los Angeles, panic seized her mind. Desperation turned into venom. The mask of elegance slipped entirely off her face, revealing the vicious, narcissistic creature beneath.

"You care more about this pathetic brat than your own wife!" Victoria suddenly shrieked, losing all composure. Her voice turned shrill and hideous. "He’s weak! Just like his dead, pathetic mother!"

Before anyone could comprehend what was happening, Victoria bent down, scooped up a massive, two-pound slab of crushed, dense cake saturated with heavy cream and jam, and with a guttural scream of hysteria, hurled it directly at Marcus’s face.
