Chapter 13 - The Vanishing at Dead Man’s Cove

Julian ripped his phone from his pocket the second he cleared the prison’s electronic gate.

Six missed calls from Marcus.

Three missed calls from Clara.

Julian’s stomach dropped through the floorboards of the SUV. He hit redial with a trembling thumb. The phone rang once before Marcus answered, his voice fractured by static and heavy, labored breathing.

"Mr. Sterling! We’re under assault at the southern tree line! Smoke grenades, directional EMP—our satellite comms just went down!"

"Clara! Where is Clara?!" Julian roared, lunging over the front passenger seat to scream at the driver. "Step on it! Get us to the regional airfield now! Charter the fastest bird on the tarmac!"

"Mrs. Sterling took Maya to the reinforced safe room in the cellar!" Marcus yelled over the sharp, terrifying crackle of suppressed gunfire echoing through the speaker. "We have four hostiles down, but they aren't mercenary amateurs, sir—they’re wearing military-grade night vision and full tactical kit! They aren't trying to breach the front—they blew the seawall from the cliffside!"

"Hold that cellar door, Marcus! I am ninety minutes away!" Julian screamed.

The line went completely dead.

Back in Maine, the fog had rolled in thick and suffocating, swallowing the cliffside estate in an eerie, milky blindness.

Inside the subterranean panic room beneath the kitchen, Clara was pressed against the reinforced steel door, Maya clutched tightly against her chest in a carrier sling. The toddler was whimpering, sensing the terror radiating from her mother’s trembling body.

Clara held a compact 9mm pistol with both hands, the barrel pointed directly at the heavy deadbolts. The power had been cut five minutes ago. The only light in the vault was the eerie green glow of the emergency backup strip along the floorboards.

Above her head, through the reinforced concrete ceiling, came the sound of footsteps. Heavy. Deliberate. Tactical combat boots crunching across shattered glass on the kitchen floor.

Clara held her breath. A single tear tracked down her pale cheek, but her jaw was set like stone. She had survived Eleanor’s cruelty, she had survived the boardroom humiliations, and she had fought through a high-risk pregnancy while the world tried to break her. She would kill anyone who touched her child.

*Beep. Beep. Beep.*

Clara’s heart stopped.

The digital biometric keypad on the exterior of the vault door—a military-grade lock coded exclusively to Julian’s and Clara’s retinas and passcodes—was chirping.

*ACCESS GRANTED.*

A heavy hydraulic hiss echoed through the small vault. The steel locking bars retracted with a thunderous clunk.

The heavy door slowly swung open into the darkness.

Clara raised the pistol, her finger curling tightly around the trigger. "Step into the light and I swear to God I will empty this magazine into your skull!"

A tall silhouette filled the doorway.

The man was over six feet tall, dressed in a bespoke charcoal overcoat tailored over broad, athletic shoulders. He didn't carry a rifle. He wore no tactical mask.

When he stepped into the pale green emergency light, Clara’s hand shook violently.

The man had Julian’s piercing jawline. He had Julian’s broad shoulders and towering frame. But his eyes were Eleanor’s—a cold, terrifying, arctic blue that held no trace of human mercy. In his left hand, he held a sleek titanium cane tipped with a silver wolf’s head.

"You must be Clara," the man spoke. His voice was a rich, Oxford-educated baritone, dripping with effortless arrogance. "I see my little brother has decent taste in women, if not in financial strategy."

"Who the hell are you?!" Clara cried out, cocking the hammer.

"Alexander," the man said softly, taking a single step forward, ignoring the gun pointed directly between his eyes. "Alexander Sterling-Vane. The true firstborn of the Sterling dynasty. And you, my dear sister-in-law, are holding something that belongs to me."
