Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Coup

While Clara rested under armed guard at the hospital, Julian did not wait for the evening gala to begin his offensive.

At 2:00 PM, a black town car pulled up to the glittering glass monolith of Sterling Tower on Park Avenue in Manhattan. Julian stepped out, his posture rigid, his face like carved granite. He wore a tailored midnight-blue suit that concealed the bandage wrapped tightly around his bruised ribs.

He didn't take the public elevators. He swiped his executive black card and took the private lift directly to the 60th floor—the boardroom of Sterling Capital.

Inside, the emergency board meeting was already underway.

Twelve of the most powerful hedge fund managers, venture capitalists, and legacy board members sat around a forty-foot mahogany table. At the head of the table sat Arthur Pendelton—Eleanor’s oldest ally, a seventy-year-old corporate shark who had spent four decades protecting the Sterling family’s illicit maneuvers.

"The PR statement has already cleared legal," Arthur was saying, adjusting his gold-rimmed spectacles. "We frame it as a tragic psychological breakdown by the daughter-in-law. We announce Julian is taking an indefinite leave of absence to deal with family affairs, and Eleanor assumes interim chairmanship of all overseas operations—"

The heavy double doors of the boardroom were kicked open.

The loud bang reverberated through the room, cutting Arthur off mid-sentence. Every head snapped toward the entrance.

Julian walked in, followed closely by Veronica Cross and a team of four forensic accountants carrying heavy leather binders.

"Julian!" Arthur gasped, half-rising from his leather seat. "What is the meaning of this? You are supposed to be out of the city. Your mother explicitly instructed—"

"My mother is about to be arrested for a Class B felony," Julian said, his voice flat, loud, and carrying the authority of an absolute sovereign. He threw a stack of documents onto the center of the table. "And as of 8:00 AM this morning, I have exercised my legal right under Section 14 of the Sterling Trust charter."

Arthur froze, his face draining of color. "Section 14? That’s... that’s impossible. That clause requires fifty-one percent of shareholder voting equity!"

"My father left me forty percent upon his death," Julian said, walking slowly down the length of the table, his eyes pinning every board member to their seats. "Eleanor held thirty-five percent. The remaining twenty-five percent belonged to the institutional consortium."

Julian gestured toward Veronica.

Veronica stepped forward, opening her binder. "As of two hours ago, Cross & Associates, on behalf of our international investment syndicate, completed the acquisition of that entire twenty-five percent stake from Vanguard and Blackthorn Funds. Added to Julian’s forty percent, Mr. Julian Sterling now controls sixty-five percent of the voting power in this company."

A dead, suffocating silence descended over the boardroom.

These were men who traded billions over lunch, who destroyed foreign economies with credit swaps, but they recognized an absolute ambush when they saw one. Julian hadn't just rebelled against his mother; he had executed a hostile takeover of his own family dynasty in under twelve hours.

"Julian, please," Arthur stammered, sweating through his stiff collar. "Your mother built this firm. You cannot simply discard her—"

"She didn't build this firm. My grandfather built it. She merely bled it dry to fund her private lifestyle and cover up her crimes," Julian said, stopping at the head of the table. He leaned down, placing both palms on the mahogany, towering over Arthur. "Resolution One: Eleanor Sterling is immediately stripped of her title as Managing Partner, removed from the Board of Directors, and all corporate credit lines, private aviation access, and security personnel funded by this firm are terminated effective immediately."

"You... you can't do this!" one of the senior board members blustered. "The stock will crash!"

"The stock is going to crash anyway," Julian replied coldly, looking around the room. "Because at 7:00 PM tonight, the world is going to watch Eleanor Sterling walk into the Metropolitan Museum in handcuffs. If you want Sterling Capital to survive the tsunami, you will vote to ratify my chairmanship right now, or I will liquidate every single asset in this firm and leave you holding empty shares."

Julian stood upright and checked his watch.

"You have sixty seconds to raise your hands."

For five agonizing seconds, nobody moved. The air in the room was so thick with tension it felt flammable.

Then, Arthur Pendelton swallowed hard, looked down at his desk, and slowly raised his right hand.

One by one, like falling dominoes, every single board member around the table raised their hands.

Julian looked at the unanimous room without a hint of triumph. There was no joy in this victory. It was merely the cold, mechanical demolition of a tyrant’s fortress, stone by stone.

"Meeting adjourned," Julian said. "Veronica, freeze every personal account tied to her name. Leave her with exactly five hundred dollars in a local checking account. Let’s see how much influence the Queen of Newport has when her cards decline."

As Julian walked out of the boardroom, his phone buzzed. It was an encrypted text from Clara’s room at the hospital.

*She’s moving,* the text read. *Her private motorcade just crossed the Triborough Bridge. She’s heading to the Met.*

Julian stepped into the private elevator, his eyes hardening into flint.

May you like

"Time to finish this," he muttered.
