Chapter 16 - The Return of the Queen

Manhattan bowed once more before Eleanor Sterling.

Within forty-eight hours of her release, the financial capitals of London, Tokyo, and New York were rocked by the sudden, aggressive re-emergence of Sterling Holdings—now rebranded under the monolithic umbrella of *The Vane Consortium*.

Alexander had played the courts like a master violinist. The federal prosecutors who had celebrated Eleanor’s downfall were either mysteriously reassigned, caught in manufactured financial scandals, or forced to resign under political pressure orchestrated by Alexander’s European financial syndicate.

In the penthouse suite of the Baccarat Hotel, Eleanor sat on a plush velvet sofa, sipping vintage Krug champagne from a crystal flute.

Across from her, Alexander stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring down at the glowing artery of Fifth Avenue.

"The girl took the bait," Alexander said, swirling a glass of scotch. "Julian’s marriage is fractured. The trust between them is shattered."

Eleanor took a slow sip, a cruel, satisfied smile playing across her scarlet lips. "Julian was always weak. He inherited his father’s cursed romanticism. He thinks love is a shield. He doesn't understand that love is merely an exposed artery."

"And the Wright trust?" Eleanor asked, her tone sharpening like an unsheathed dagger. "Three hundred million in uncut diamonds and bearer bonds, locked behind biometric encryption. Did you secure the infant’s DNA?"

Alexander reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a sterile medical swab encased in a plastic vial.

"When Clara lowered her weapon to look at the ledger, my laser sweep confirmed the child’s biometric markers," Alexander smirked. "The vault in Zurich will open the moment we present the infant or her verified genomic sequence."

Eleanor rose from the couch, her ivory coat sweeping behind her like a royal shroud. She walked over to Alexander, placing a manicured hand with razor-sharp crimson nails onto her eldest son’s broad shoulder.

"You did well, Alexander. When I sent you to Switzerland twenty-five years ago, I knew you possessed the Sterling killer instinct." Eleanor’s eyes flashed with cold, vindictive fire. "Julian humiliated me. He forced me onto my knees in front of two hundred of my peers. He watched the federal marshals put handcuffs on my wrists while that little pregnant waitress smiled."

Eleanor raised her champagne glass toward the Manhattan skyline.

"I am going to take their child, Alexander. I am going to raise Maya to despise her father. And as for Clara... I will make sure she ends up exactly like her father. Six feet beneath the pavement."
