Chapter 5 - Whispers in the ICU

By midday, Clara’s eyes fluttered open.
The sterile white ceiling was the first thing she saw, accompanied by the persistent, mechanical hum of medical equipment. For three terrifying seconds, her mind was blank—and then the flood of memories hit her like an icy tidal wave.
The crowd laughing. The champagne burning her eyes. The unbearable, agonizing pull on her scalp.
"My baby!" Clara gasped, shooting upward in the bed, her hands instantly flying to her belly. Her heart monitor spiked, beeping frantically as sheer panic overtook her. "Julian! Where is—"
"I’m right here, Clara. I’m right here. Look at me, sweetheart."
Julian was beside her in an instant, his large, warm hands gently pressing down on her shoulders, guiding her back onto the pillows. His voice was a soothing anchor in the middle of her panic. "The baby is safe. Listen. Listen to the monitor."
Clara stopped struggling. She held her breath, listening to the rhythmic, rapid *thump-thump, thump-thump* of the fetal heartbeat playing through the machine beside her bed. The sound washed over her like holy water. Tears welled up in her eyes, spilling over her pale cheeks as she collapsed against Julian’s chest, weeping with a combination of profound relief and lingering trauma.
"She wanted to kill our baby, Julian," Clara sobbed, her fingers digging into his shirt. "She looked into my eyes... she hated this child before it was even born. She hated me so much..."
"She will never touch you again," Julian whispered into her hair, his arms wrapped around her with an iron grip. "I promise you, Clara. She is never coming near you or our child for the rest of our lives."
"She’s too powerful, Julian," Clara murmured, looking up at him with red-rimmed eyes. "Your family... they own judges. They own police chiefs. You know what she did to your cousin when he spoke against the trust. She buried him. She will destroy you."
"She can try," Julian said, his voice deadly calm.
Before Clara could answer, a knock sounded at the door. Two uniformed officers from the Rhode Island State Police stepped inside, accompanied by a seasoned detective in a dark trench coat carrying a notebook.
"Mr. Julian Sterling?" Detective Miller asked, his eyes sweeping across the room, taking in Clara’s bandaged head and the bruised discoloration beginning to bloom along her arms. "We received the call from your medical team. We also received an official emergency criminal complaint filed by your legal representation."
Clara looked at Julian in shock. "Julian... what did you do?"
"I reported my mother for felony aggravated assault against a pregnant woman, and battery," Julian stated clearly, his voice ringing through the hospital room. He turned to the detective. "Detective Miller, my wife is awake. She is ready to give her statement. And my legal counsel has already delivered the raw security footage of the entire incident to the District Attorney's office."
Detective Miller’s eyebrows rose slightly. Dealing with the Sterlings was usually an exercise in dealing with walls of lawyers, NDAs, and massive payoffs to make crimes disappear. To have the sole heir of the empire actively handing over state’s evidence against his own matriarch was unprecedented in his thirty years on the force.
"Ma'am," Detective Miller said, pulling a chair toward the bed, clicking his pen. "Take your time. Start from the moment Eleanor Sterling approached you on the terrace."
For the next forty minutes, Clara spoke. She didn't exaggerate. She didn't dramatize. She laid out every detail with heartbreaking precision—the insults, the hair-pulling, the forced kneeling, the cold champagne, and the agonizing dread she felt for her unborn child.
As the detective wrote, the air in the room grew heavy. Even the two hardened patrolmen standing by the door shifted uncomfortably, their faces hardening with disgust.
"Thank you, Mrs. Sterling," Detective Miller said, closing his notebook. "Based on this testimony and the forensic report from the attending physician, we have more than enough probable cause. A warrant for Eleanor Sterling’s arrest is being drawn up by the magistrate as we speak."
"Wait," Clara said suddenly, her voice trembling.
Julian turned to her. "Clara?"
Clara looked at Detective Miller, then at her husband. A strange, haunting light flickered behind her hazel eyes.
"Detective... when you execute that warrant, you won't find her at the Newport Manor," Clara said quietly.
Miller frowned. "Our intel says she’s currently bunkered inside the estate with a private security team."
"No," Clara shook her head slowly. "Tonight is the Manhattan Philanthropic Gala at the Metropolitan Museum. Eleanor has spent five million dollars securing the 'Woman of the Year' honor. Her ego is larger than her fear of the law. She won't skip it. She believes her money makes her invisible. If you want to arrest her, that’s where she’ll be."
Detective Miller looked at Julian, then back at Clara. A faint, grim smirk touched the detective's lips.
"An arrest on the red carpet at the Met," Miller muttered. "The District Attorney is going to have a field day."
After the officers left, Julian took Clara’s hand, kissing her knuckles. "How did you know she wouldn't hide?"
Clara looked out the hospital window, watching the rain begin to fall against the glass.
"Because I lived in her house for two years, Julian," Clara said, her voice dropping into a tone Julian had never heard from her before—sharp, cold, and calculating. "Eleanor doesn't fear the law. She only fears irrelevance. But there’s something else you need to know, Julian. Something I was too afraid to tell you until now."
Julian’s brow furrowed. "What is it?"
May you like
"The reason she hates this baby... it’s not just because I’m poor," Clara whispered, her eyes meeting his with terrifying intensity. "She knows who my mother was."
