Chapter 2 - The Sound of Shattered Crystal

The collapse of the champagne tower sounded like a crystal chandelier crashing into an iron foundry.
Five hundred glasses slammed against the marble flooring in an instantaneous, deafening wave of destruction. Shards of razor-sharp crystal exploded outward like shrapnel, flying into the evening air alongside gallons of golden liquor. Eleanor Sterling shrieked—a high, ragged sound of genuine terror—as the cascading avalanche of heavy glass struck her from behind, knocking her legs out from under her and burying her emerald gown beneath a tidal wave of sparkling wine, shattered stems, and shattered pride.
The guests scattered like roaches caught in a sudden beam of light. Women in ballgowns screamed as champagne splashed their hemlines, men scrambled backward knocking over gilded chairs, and the dignified façade of the Newport high society evaporated into total, chaotic pandemonium.
Amidst the rain of flying glass, Julian didn't flinch. He didn't look at his mother, who was now writhing on the soaked floor, her perfect chignon ruined, screaming as glass shards cut into her palms.
Instead, Julian threw his body over Clara.
He shielded her entirely with his back and shoulders, taking the impact of flying crystal across his tuxedo, absorbing every impact so that not a single piece touched the woman weeping beneath him.
"Julian! Julian, the baby—" Clara gasped, her hands trembling violently against her abdomen. A sudden, sharp contraction seized her womb, tearing a ragged whimper from her throat. Her knuckles turned white. "Julian, something's wrong. It hurts... God, it hurts so bad!"
Julian looked down at his wife. The cold fury that had driven him to destroy his family’s centerpiece dissolved instantly into sheer, primal terror. Clara’s lips were turning blue, her breathing shallow and rapid. Between the cold champagne soaking her skin, the emotional trauma, and the violent stress of the assault, her body was plunging into shock.
"Look at me, Clara. Stay with me!" Julian barked, lifting her into his arms regardless of the broken glass tearing through the knees of his trousers. Blood dripped from a clean cut on his cheek, but he didn't even notice. He stood tall, carrying her pregnant weight against his chest with fierce, unwavering strength.
"You animal!" Eleanor’s voice rose from the wreckage behind him, choked with rage and humiliation. She was struggling to sit up among the carnage of broken flutes, her emerald dress ruined, blood staining her lace sleeves. "Julian! You threw that at your own mother! I will ruin you! I will cut you out of every trust, every account, every board! You will die in the gutter with this peasant!"
Julian turned his head slowly. The look he cast over his shoulder toward the woman who gave birth to him was so devoid of human emotion that even Eleanor’s venomous rant choked in her throat.
"If anything happens to my wife," Julian whispered, his voice dangerously level, cutting through the chaos like an executioner’s blade, "or to my child... you won't need to cut me off, Eleanor. Because there won't be enough left of you to hold a pen."
He didn't wait for her response. Julian turned and sprinted through the parted crowd. The guests pressed themselves against the walls, terrified of the manic, blood-smeared heir who carried his trembling wife through the grand arched doorways and out into the sweeping courtyard.
Outside, the cool ocean breeze hit them like a slap. Julian kicked open the door of his matte-black SUV, bypassed the chauffeur entirely, placed Clara gently into the reclined passenger seat, and climbed behind the wheel. The engine roared to life with the guttural scream of a twin-turbo V8.
Tires tore into the pristine gravel driveway, spraying stone against the manicured hedges, leaving the Sterling Manor burning in its own disgrace behind them.
Inside the car, Clara was shivering violently, her teeth chattering. "Julian... the contractions. They're too fast. It’s too early... seven months is too early..."
"Hold on, my love. Just hold on to me," Julian pleaded, gripping the steering wheel with one hand while his other tightly interlaced with Clara’s freezing fingers. His speedometer climbed: eighty, ninety, one hundred miles per hour along the winding coastal highway toward Rhode Island Memorial Hospital. "You are not losing this baby. I swear to you, Clara. I won't let her take anything else from us."
Meanwhile, back at the manor, the cleanup had begun in hushed, terrified whispers. Servants swarmed the terrace with brooms and towels, desperately clearing the evidence before the local press caught wind.
Eleanor Sterling stood on the grand staircase, wrapped in a fresh cashmere shawl, her hands bandaged by an in-house private physician. Her face was gray with fury, her jaw locked tight.
"Get Marcus on the phone," she hissed to her personal assistant, who was trembling like a leaf. "Marcus Vance. Now."
"The... the lead of private security, ma'am?"
"Yes, you idiot!" Eleanor snapped, her manicured nails digging into the mahogany banister. "Julian was looking at the terrace archway before he ran. Someone was watching. Someone recorded that scene. Find every camera, scrub every server, and if there is a rogue device on this property, burn the memory drives to ash. Nobody outside these walls can ever see what happened tonight!"
The assistant bowed quickly and fled into the dark corridors.
Eleanor turned toward the shattered terrace, her eyes narrowing into cold slits. She had spent thirty years building the Sterling dynasty into an untouchable empire of finance, politics, and social prestige. She had eliminated business rivals, crushed political enemies, and silenced tabloids with a flick of her wrist.
She wasn't about to let an orphan schoolteacher and an ungrateful son pull down her throne.
What Eleanor didn't know was that Marcus Vance was not currently answering his phone.
At that very moment, fifty yards away in the darkened gardener’s shed hidden by weeping willows, a man sat in front of a dual-monitor workstation. On the left screen, the tiny red indicator light of the garden camera was still glowing green, indicating a completed upload. On the right screen, a raw, 4K video file was already locked in a cloud server—one that Eleanor Sterling’s money could never touch.
The man picked up his phone, dialed a burner number, and waited for the click on the other end.
"It’s done," the man said softly. "She took the bait. The matriarch assaulted her in front of three hundred witnesses, and Julian snapped. We have everything."
A cold, feminine voice answered from the other end of the line. "Good. Don't release it yet. Let Clara reach the hospital. Let Eleanor think she can buy her way out of this."
"And then?"
May you like
"And then, we strip Eleanor Sterling of every single thing she loves."
