Chapter 7 - The Ghost in the Foundation

The Metropolitan Museum of Art was bathed in dramatic amber spotlights, transforming its iconic neoclassical façade into a glowing temple of high culture.

A velvet-roped red carpet stretched across the grand stone steps, lined on both sides by hundreds of photographers, journalists, and television broadcast crews. Outside the barricades, crowds of onlookers gathered, screaming as movie stars, European royals, and Wall Street titans exited their limousines, dazzling the flashing cameras with couture dresses and multi-million-dollar jewels.

Tonight was Eleanor Sterling’s coronation.

The "Manhattan Philanthropic Society" was presenting her with the *Global Humanitarian of the Year* award for her foundation’s supposed contributions to maternal healthcare worldwide. The irony was so thick it bordered on demonic, but in Eleanor’s mind, it was simply her due.

A stretch Maybach pulled up to the red carpet.

The chauffeur opened the door, and Eleanor Sterling stepped out.

She looked magnificent. She had replaced the ruined emerald gown from the night before with a breathtaking, custom-made midnight-black velvet cape dress, high-necked and lined with antique pearls. Her silver-streaked hair was sculpted to absolute perfection. The minor scratches on her hands were completely concealed beneath long silk opera gloves. Her head was held high, her smile regal, practiced, and unyielding.

The cameras exploded with flashes.

"Eleanor! Over here! Eleanor, look left!"

Eleanor paused on the red carpet, turning gracefully, waving to the press corps with the poise of an empress who had completely erased the ugly reality of the previous night from existence. In her mind, Clara was a broken animal crying in a hospital bed, Julian was a rebellious child who would soon starve without his trust fund, and she was, as always, untouchable.

She reached the top of the grand steps, entering the Great Hall of the museum.

Inside, two thousand high-society guests mingled beneath the towering stone arches. Giant screens hung above the central stage, displaying the foundation's logo and a massive portrait of Eleanor with the words: *HONORING A LEGACY OF COMPASSION.*

Eleanor accepted a fresh glass of champagne from a passing waiter, taking a slow, triumphant sip. Several prominent socialites approached her, curtsying and whispering congratulations, conveniently pretending that the chaotic rumors from Newport hadn't already begun leaking into private WhatsApp group chats.

"Eleanor, darling," purred Evelyn Van der Bilt, a venomous socialite of Eleanor's vintage. "You look utterly radiant. We heard Julian had a slight... domestic disagreement yesterday? Such a shame he couldn't make it tonight."

Eleanor offered a delicate, pitying sigh. "Julian is young, Evelyn. He married beneath his station, and unfortunately, the girl had a rather dramatic psychiatric collapse last evening. Julian is dealing with the medical professionals. A mother’s heart breaks, of course, but one must soldier on for charity."

"Of course," Evelyn nodded, her eyes glittering with malicious curiosity. "So brave of you."

Suddenly, the chimes echoed through the Great Hall, signaling that the award presentation was about to begin.

The guests took their seats at fifty grand banquet tables surrounding the main podium. The Governor of New York took the stage, clearing his throat, tapping the microphone.

"Distinguished guests, leaders of industry, honored patrons," the Governor announced, his voice booming through the hall. "Tonight, we honor a woman whose name is synonymous with prestige, generosity, and an unyielding commitment to the vulnerable. Ladies and gentlemen, please direct your attention to the screens as we present a tribute to our Humanitarian of the Year—Mrs. Eleanor Sterling!"

The lights dimmed across the Great Hall.

Eleanor smoothed her black velvet gown, sitting tall in her front-row VIP seat, her face glowing with narcissistic satisfaction. She waited for the polished, three-minute tribute video showing her smiling beside foreign dignitaries and touring orphanages in Africa.

The giant screens flickered to life.

A loud, piercing hum of feedback echoed through the museum’s state-of-the-art surround sound system.

The foundation logo did not appear.

Instead, a timestamp appeared in the upper left corner: *YESTERDAY – 10:42 PM.*

Eleanor’s smile froze.

On the eighty-foot screens above the stage, the crystal-clear 4K footage from the terrace in Newport erupted before two thousand of the most influential people in America.
