Chapter 18 - The Ambush at the Safehouse

"Down!" Julian screamed, tackling Clara and Maya onto the floorboards just as a hail of automatic gunfire shattered every window in the bedroom.

Glass exploded inward like crystalline shrapnel. Bullets tore through the drywall, shredding the mattress, filling the air with plaster dust and the smell of cordite.

Maya shrieked in absolute terror. Clara covered her baby’s body with her own, curling into a tight ball, weeping as the deafening roar of tactical weapons chewed the room to pieces.

Julian pulled two Glock magazines from his tactical belt, racking the slide of his weapon with lethal precision. His eyes weren't those of a wounded husband anymore. They were the eyes of a cornered predator whose family was under siege.

"Marcus!" Julian barked into his throat mic. "Sitrep!"

Static hissed, followed by Marcus’s strained voice over the comms: "Four SUVs! Blackout tactical units! They’re using thermal imaging through the walls! We can't hold the ground floor, Mr. Sterling—they’re moving up the stairwell!"

"Fall back to the extraction tunnel in the basement!" Julian ordered. "Blow the primary staircase charges on my mark!"

Julian turned to Clara. He reached down, grabbing her by the shoulders, pulling her face inches from his.

"You hate me. You have every right to hate me," Julian said, his voice fierce, steady, and blazing with unconditional love. "But if you want Maya to live through the next five minutes, you listen to every single word I say. Do you understand me, Clara?!"

Clara, trembling violently, locked her eyes onto his. Through the terror, she saw the undeniable, desperate truth in his gaze: he would die ten thousand deaths before letting a bullet touch her or Maya.

"I understand," Clara choked out, gripping Maya tighter against her chest.

"Take the utility shaft behind the wardrobe," Julian instructed, kicking open the false panel in the corner of the master closet. "It leads directly to the subterranean drainage tunnel beneath the garage. Marcus is waiting at the exit with the armored Suburban. Do not stop. Do not look back. Run!"

"Julian, what about you?!" Clara grabbed his sleeve. Despite all the betrayal, the thought of leaving him behind sent a cold spike of horror through her heart.

Julian pulled a remote detonator from his vest.

"I’m going to introduce my brother to the Sterling house rules," Julian said coldly.

He kissed Maya’s forehead, then leaned down and pressed a fierce, lingering kiss against Clara’s lips—a kiss that tasted of dust, copper, and desperation.

"I love you, Clara. I have always loved you."

He pushed her into the shaft and slammed the heavy fireproof panel shut.

Julian turned, kicked open the bedroom door, and stepped into the hallway just as three heavily armed assault operatives reached the top of the stairs.

Julian raised his Glock and fired three double-taps with terrifying, lethal accuracy. The operatives collapsed backward down the stairs.

At the bottom of the shattered foyer stood Alexander.

He wasn't wearing body armor. He held a silver-plated .45 in his right hand, looking up at Julian with that sickening, familiar smirk.

"Touching family reunion, little brother," Alexander called out over the echoing gunfire. "Where’s the little waitress? Did you hide her under the bed?"

Julian raised the remote detonator.

"She’s somewhere you will never reach, Alexander."

May you like

Julian slammed his thumb down on the red trigger.

The C4 charges planted beneath the structural pillars of the staircase detonated with a concussive roar that ripped the safehouse in two.
