Chapter 14 - The Voice from the Crypt

The brass key found in Evelyn's silk gown fit the lock of the fireproof box with a smooth, oiled click. Inside, there were no bundles of hundred-dollar bills or stolen diamonds. There was only a single, black-leather micro-cassette recorder, a yellowed Manila folder labeled *Blackwood Estate Trust: Reassignment of Assets*, and a heavy, silver thumb drive.

Miller clicked the play button on the recorder.

The hiss of magnetic tape filled the nursery, punctuated by the rhythmic, mechanical hum of an oxygen concentrator. Then, a voice emerged from the speaker—Sarah’s voice. Weak, rasping, but burning with an indomitable maternal fury.

*"If you are listening to this, Daniel... it means I was too late. It means the medicine they are giving me has done its job, and my heart has finally stopped beating."*

Daniel sank against the wall, burying his face in his hands as a dry, wrenching sob tore through his throat. Ethan walked over silently, pressing his small hand against Daniel's trembling shoulder.

*"Arthur came to me three days ago,"* Sarah’s recorded voice continued, each syllable laced with suppressed agony. *"He thought I was delirious from the fever. He stood over my bed and told me that Daniel had signed over the guardianship of Ethan’s trust to a blind corporate entity in Zurich. He told me that if I went to the police about the missing foundation funds, Daniel would be indicted for international wire fraud. He made Daniel look like the criminal, to break my will to live."*

A harsh cough echoed on the recording, followed by the faint sound of liquid splashing.

*"He doesn't know I kept copies,"* Sarah whispered, her voice fading to a fragile hiss. *"The real account ledgers aren't in Switzerland. They are in the private vault beneath the old Blackwood family chapel at St. Jude's Cemetery. Evelyn stole the master cipher from my jewelry box, but she doesn't have the biological key. The vault lock requires two biometric confirmations: Daniel's print... and the boy's."*

The recording cut out abruptly with the loud slam of a bedroom door and Evelyn’s unmistakable voice in the background: *Sarah, darling, who are you talking to?* Then, static.

"St. Jude’s Cemetery," Miller muttered, standing up and drawing his sidearm, checking the chamber with a practiced snap of the slide. "That’s less than four miles from here, up the river bluffs."

Before Daniel could respond, the power in the manor violently died.

The nursery plunged into pitch-black darkness. The ambient hum of the HVAC system vanished, replaced instantly by the scream of the wind outside. Downstairs, the heavy plate glass of the conservatory shattered with a violent, concussive crash.
