Chapter 15 - Shadows in the Conservatory

"Get down!" Miller yelled, shoving Daniel and Ethan toward the bathroom alcove.

Daniel grabbed Ethan, shielding the boy’s entire body beneath his own. His heart slammed against his ribs like a sledgehammer. The darkness in the manor was absolute, save for the strobe-like flashes of lightning that lit up the hallway through the transoms.

Footsteps echoed from the ground floor. Heavy, deliberate, crunching over the shards of broken glass.

"Marcus," a cultured, calm voice echoed up the grand staircase. It was Arthur Sterling. "There’s no need to make this untidy. The local dispatch is currently managing three downed power lines on Route 9. No backup is coming for at least forty-five minutes."

"Drop the weapon and surrender, Arthur!" Miller shouted from behind the doorframe, his service pistol trained into the corridor. "Evelyn gave up the burner phone! We know about the pond! We know about the digitalis!"

A dry, chilling laugh drifted up the stairs.

"Evelyn was an amateur," Arthur called back, his tone smooth, conversational, like a partner addressing an associate in a boardroom. "She panicked because the child saw her taking Sarah's jewelry. If she had just stuck to the schedule, Sarah would have slipped away quietly, and Daniel would have taken his own life within a year out of grief-fueled alcoholism. That was the contract, Detective."

"Contract for who?" Daniel screamed from the darkness, his voice dripping with venom. "I paid you millions, Arthur! You were Sarah's godfather!"

"Your grandfather built an empire on blood money in the Caribbean, Daniel!" Arthur's voice grew louder, steadily mounting the stairs. "My family financed the initial Blackwood fleet in 1948, and your grandfather swindled mine out of every percentage point! The Blackwood fortune belongs to the Sterling estate by bloodright! Sarah realized it when she reviewed the foundation trusts. She was going to return the equity to me voluntarily before she got cold feet!"

"She knew you were a thief!" Daniel roared.

*Bang!*

A high-caliber bullet tore through the oak door, showering Daniel and Ethan with razor-sharp splinters. Ethan didn't scream; he held onto Daniel's coat with knuckles white as bone, his eyes wide and burning with Sarah's fierce defiance.

Miller returned fire, popping off two rapid rounds down the stairwell. A grunt of pain echoed from the landing, followed by the heavy thud of a body colliding with a marble bust.

"I hit him," Miller hissed, reloading swiftly. "Daniel, take Ethan through the laundry chute in the master suite. It empties into the basement cellar. From there, take the service tunnel to the garage and get out of here!"

"I'm not leaving you!" Daniel hissed.

"You have to protect the boy!" Miller yelled, turning to fire another round into the hallway. "He's Sarah's legacy! Go!"
