Chapter 8 - The Falling Empire

The muzzle flash lit the entire terrace in a blinding burst of orange and white.
The bullet struck Marcus Reed square in the upper chest. The kinetic force stopped the doctor in his tracks, lifting him backward off his feet. He crashed against the low stone balustrade, his knife slipping from limp fingers, before tumbling violently over the edge and into the dark expanse of the rose gardens thirty feet below.
A heavy, ringing silence fell over the terrace, punctured only by the hiss of rain and the distant rumbling of the receding storm.
Vanessa stood frozen, the smoking rifle slipping from her numb fingers and clattering onto the flagstones. Her eyes were wide, vacant, staring into the dark void where Marcus had disappeared.
"I... I shot him," she whispered, her voice barely audible above the wind. "He was going to kill me."
Daniel didn't look at the gardens. He didn't look at Vanessa. He moved instantly to the corner of the terrace, dropping to his knees and scooping Ethan into his arms. The boy was trembling violently, his little hands clutching Daniel’s soaked shirt with an iron grip.
"I've got you, Ethan. I've got you," Daniel whispered fiercely, burying his face in his son’s wet hair. "It's over, buddy. It's over."
Vanessa slowly turned around. She looked down at Daniel and Ethan, her face completely hollowed out by shock. Then, slowly, the gears in her manipulative mind began to turn once more. She dropped to her knees on the wet stone, crawling toward them, her hands clasping together in desperate supplication.
"Daniel... Daniel, you saw it," she cried, her voice cracking with theatrical hysterics. "He attacked you! He was going to hurt Ethan! I saved you! I chose you, Daniel!"
Daniel slowly rose to his feet, holding Ethan securely against his chest. He looked down at the woman who had brought so much poison into his sanctuary.
"You didn't save us, Vanessa," Daniel said, his voice dead and devoid of any human warmth. "You saved yourself."
From down the long gravel driveway, the piercing wail of police sirens tore through the night air. Blinding red and blue emergency lights swept across the canopy of the weeping willows, illuminating the entire estate in a pulsating rhythm of law and order.
Liam Vance’s tactical team had breached the main gates, followed by six New York State Police cruisers.
Vanessa froze. She scrambled to her feet, looking wildly toward the dark woods at the edge of the lawn, then back toward the mansion.
"Daniel, please," she begged, tears streaming through the mascara running down her face. "Tell them it was an intruder. Tell them we were attacked. If I go to prison, I'll die there!"
"You should have thought about that before you put Sarah in the ground," Daniel said coldly.
Three armed tactical officers in black ballistic vests burst through the French doors onto the terrace, their assault rifles raised, laser sights painting bright red dots across Vanessa’s chest.
"State Police! Hands in the air! Down on the ground! Do it now!"
Vanessa looked at the red dots dancing across her silk robe. She looked at Daniel, who turned his back on her, shielding Ethan’s eyes from the scene.

Slowly, methodically, Vanessa Caldwell sank to her knees in the cold rain, raising her trembling, empty hands into the night air.
