Chapter 6 - The Shadows in the West Wing

The world seemed to tilt on its axis.

Daniel didn't waste a single breath arguing with her. With an animalistic roar, he shoved past Vanessa, slamming her against the hallway wall with enough force to knock the breath from her lungs. He sprinted down the long, carpeted corridor of the third floor, his shoes skidding across the polished hardwood as he rounded the grand staircase.

"Ethan!" Daniel screamed, his voice tearing raw against his vocal cords. "Ethan!"

The mansion was pitch black. Vanessa hadn't been lying—the main circuit breakers had been killed. Only the rhythmic, jagged flashes of lightning through the two-story foyer windows illuminated the descent into the lower halls. The storm raged outside like a furious beast, wind rattling the heavy oak doors and rain hammering against the glass.

Daniel took the stairs three at a time, his heart hammering against his ribs like a sledgehammer. *Not Ethan. Please God, take me, take the fortune, take everything, but not Ethan.*

He reached the west wing corridor. The air here felt colder, damp from an open window somewhere down the hall.

Ethan’s bedroom door stood wide open.

Inside, the spinning blue stars of the constellation nightlight were dead. Lightning strobed through the bedroom window, casting stark, black-and-white silhouettes across the room.

The bed was empty. The velvet-covered journal of Sarah’s was lying open on the floor, its pages ruffled by the wind blowing through the open balcony doors.

"Looking for the boy, Daniel?" a calm, cultured voice spoke from the darkest corner of the room.

Daniel whirled around. Standing near the heavy mahogany armoire was Dr. Marcus Reed.

In his late forties, Reed was tall, lean, and impeccably dressed in a dark raincoat. In his gloved right hand, he held a heavy tactical flashlight; in his left, a heavy brass fireplace poker taken from the downstairs library. His face was angular, handsome in a hollow, clinical way, his cold eyes studying Daniel with the detached curiosity of a surgeon about to make an incision.

"Where is my son?" Daniel asked, his voice shaking with a terrifying mixture of grief and lethal intent. Daniel slowly lowered his center of gravity, his muscles coiling like steel springs.

"The boy is safe for the moment," Reed said smoothly, stepping out of the shadows. "He ran out onto the terrace when he heard me coming down the hall. Kids are like rats, aren't they? Fast, intuitive. But the terrace gates are locked, Daniel. There's nowhere for him to go in this storm."

"Why, Reed?" Daniel demanded, stalling for time as his eyes searched the shadows for an improvised weapon. "The money? Vanessa said you were drowning in debt after California."

Reed let out a soft, dismissive chuckle. "Money is the byproduct, Daniel. Control is the currency. Sarah was a stubborn woman. When I was treating her, she discovered that the clinical trial drugs I was administering were placebos—that the real shipments were being diverted to private clinics in South America. She was going to blow the whistle. She was going to destroy everything I spent twenty years building."

Daniel felt a suffocating nausea rise in his throat. Sarah hadn't just been murdered for the Sterling inheritance. She had been murdered because she had uncovered Reed’s medical black-market pipeline.

"So Vanessa offered you a way out," Daniel whispered.

"Vanessa is an exceptional partner," Reed agreed, taking a slow step toward Daniel, raising the brass poker. "She identified you as the perfect mark: wealthy, broken, desperate for family. We were going to give you a child, Daniel. A clean, beautiful baby boy from an undocumented surrogate. You would have lived another five, maybe six years before your heart finally gave out from the stress of corporate life. Vanessa would have inherited everything. And Ethan... Ethan would have been comfortably tucked away in an institution in Zurich."

Reed sighed, shaking his head with mock regret.

"But you had to let a seven-year-old ruin an eight-figure operation with plastic bugs."

May you like

With sudden, violent speed, Reed lunged forward, swinging the heavy brass poker directly at Daniel’s skull.
