Chapter 7 - Blood on the Marble

The heavy brass poker whistled through the air. Daniel ducked instinctively, the metal tip grazing the top of his ear with a sharp, stinging pain that drew immediate blood.

The momentum of the swing threw Reed forward. Daniel capitalized instantly, driving his shoulder hard into the doctor’s chest. The two men crashed into the heavy wooden armoire, sending antique porcelain figurines shattering across the floor.

Reed was deceptively strong, his wiry frame powered by the desperate adrenaline of a cornered criminal. He drove his elbow backward into Daniel’s ribs, cracking the bone with an audible snap.

Daniel gasped in agony, his vision graying at the edges, but he refused to release his grip. He grabbed Reed’s wrist, slamming it repeatedly against the edge of the armoire until the brass poker slipped from the doctor's fingers and clattered onto the hardwood floor.

"You're a dead man, Sterling!" Reed hissed, spinning around and driving his thumbs directly toward Daniel’s eyes in a brutal, street-fighting gouge.

Daniel jerked his head back, catching the blow across his cheekbone. He swung a heavy, desperate right cross that connected cleanly with Reed’s jaw. The doctor’s head snapped back, blood spraying from his lip, and he stumbled backward through the shattered glass of the French doors, collapsing onto the rain-swept stone terrace outside.

Daniel stumbled after him into the driving rain, his breath ragged, clutching his cracked ribs. The storm screamed around them, drenching both men within seconds. Lightning illuminated the vast stone balustrade that overlooked the formal gardens thirty feet below.

And there, huddled in the far corner against the stone railing, soaked to the bone and shivering violently, was Ethan.

"Daddy!" the boy screamed through the wind.

"Stay there, Ethan!" Daniel yelled, wiping blood and rain from his eyes.

Reed was already scrambling to his feet, pulling a compact ceramic switchblade from his raincoat pocket. The blade snapped open with a vicious click.

"It ends here, Daniel," Reed shouted over the roar of the thunder. "If I go to prison, I go for capital murder anyway. What's two more bodies?"

Before Reed could lunge toward Daniel, a shadow appeared at the terrace doors.

It was Vanessa.

She stood in her soaked silk robe, her wet blonde hair plastered across her skull like a shroud. In her right hand, she held Daniel’s heavy hunting rifle—a collector's piece usually mounted above the study fireplace.

"Marcus! Daniel! Stop!" she shrieked, raising the barrel of the weapon.

Both men froze in the pouring rain. Reed slowly lowered his knife, a grim, relieved smile spreading across his bloody lips.

"Good girl, Vanessa," Reed called out, breathing heavily. "Shoot him. We stage it as a home invasion. We take the boy and the car and we disappear across the border."

Daniel stood completely still, his eyes locked on his wife. The rain poured off the brim of his brow. He didn't plead. He didn't beg. He simply stepped sideways, positioning his body directly between the barrel of the rifle and where Ethan sat huddled on the stones.

"Look at him, Vanessa," Daniel said, his voice cutting through the storm with chilling clarity. "You think Marcus is going to let you walk away from this? You think you're partners?"

"Shut up, Daniel!" she screamed, her hands shaking violently on the rifle’s polished walnut stock. "Shut up!"

"He ran an illegal clinic in California, Vanessa!" Daniel shouted over the gale. "When the feds moved in, who took the fall? His nurse. His administrative assistant. Marcus always leaves a body behind to take the blame. The moment you pull that trigger, you are his sole accomplice in a double homicide. How long do you think you survive after we're dead?"

Vanessa’s eyes darted frantically between Daniel and Marcus. For the first time, a flicker of profound doubt cracked through her sociopathic veneer.

"He's lying to you, Vanessa!" Reed yelled, taking an aggressive step toward her. "Give me the rifle! Give it to me right now!"

"Stay back, Marcus!" Vanessa screamed, swinging the barrel toward him. "Don't come near me!"

"Give me the damn gun, you stupid bitch!" Reed roared, lunging forward with his knife outstretched.

A deafening crack shattered the night.
