Chapter 5 - The Cup of Shadows

Vanessa stepped into the study, the soft swish of her silk robe masking the sound of her bare feet against the dark oak floor. She set the silver tray down on the corner of Daniel’s desk, pushing the porcelain teacup toward him with meticulous care.

The scent of peppermint and lavender drifted upward, but beneath it, Daniel’s heightened senses caught a faint, bitter chemical undertone—something that smelled faintly of crushed almonds and metallic copper.

"You've been up here for hours, Daniel," she said, her voice dripping with an artificial sweetness that made his skin crawl. She moved behind him, resting her cool, slender hands on his shoulders. Her thumbs began to work the tension in his neck. "I know today was a shock. I know you're angry. But we need to be united. The press is already calling my publicist. We have to release a joint statement in the morning."

Daniel didn't pull away. He forced his muscles to remain relaxed under her touch, feeling the cold weight of the emerald-cut diamond ring pressing against his collarbone.

"What kind of statement, Vanessa?" he asked quietly, staring at the swirling steam rising from the cup.

"A tragic loss," she whispered near his ear, her breath warm against his neck. "We tell them I suffered a silent miscarriage last month, that I was so devastated by grief and so terrified of disappointing you that I suffered a dissociative break. People love a tragedy, Daniel. They will pity us. The Sterling stock won't drop a single point."

"And the baby you were going to buy from Marcus Reed?" Daniel asked, his tone deceptively casual. "What were you planning to tell the world when that child arrived?"

Vanessa’s hands paused on his shoulders for a fraction of a second before resuming their rhythmic kneading.

"I don't know what lies Ethan has been feeding you, Daniel," she said smoothly, not a single tremor of guilt in her voice. "Ethan is a troubled, traumatized little boy. Ever since Sarah died, he has lived in a fantasy world. Marcus Reed was simply my private therapist. He was trying to help me process the grief of our lost baby."

Daniel turned his head slowly, looking up into her pale, beautiful face. Her blue eyes were crystal clear, devoid of empathy, shame, or fear. She truly believed her own fabrications.

"Drink your tea, sweetheart," she whispered, tapping the rim of the china cup with a manicured fingernail. "You look exhausted. You need to sleep. Tomorrow is going to be an exhausting day."

Daniel reached out and took the cup by its delicate handle. He lifted it toward his lips, watching her eyes closely.

Vanessa’s gaze flickered downward to the liquid, her pupils dilating slightly with unmistakable anticipation. She was waiting for him to swallow. She was waiting for the slow, untraceable poison to enter his bloodstream, just as it had entered Sarah’s veins eighteen months ago.

Daniel brought the rim of the cup within an inch of his mouth, inhaled deeply, and then stopped.

"You know, Vanessa," Daniel said softly, "Sarah loved peppermint tea, too."

Vanessa’s smile tightened slightly. "Sarah had good taste."

"She did," Daniel agreed. "Except when it came to choosing friends."

With a sudden, explosive movement, Daniel grabbed Vanessa by the wrist, twisting her arm down and slamming her hand onto the desk surface. Before she could scream, he brought the piping hot cup of tea down, splashing the scalding liquid directly across her bare hand and the silk sleeve of her robe.

Vanessa shrieked in pain, stumbling backward, clutching her burned wrist to her chest.

"What are you doing?! Are you insane?!" she hissed, her face contorting into an ugly snarl.

Daniel rose from his chair, towering over her. He pulled the mason jar containing the preserved tea samples from the drawer and slammed it onto the desk beside the silver tray.

"Liam Vance has the tox screen from three nights ago, Vanessa," Daniel said, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "Digitalis. Synthetic cardiac stimulants. The same cocktail that shut down Sarah’s organs while Marcus Reed signed off on her cremation permit."

Every trace of color drained from Vanessa’s face. The shock this time was real, total, and paralyzing.

"You... you don't have proof of that," she stammered, backing toward the study door. "Sarah was sick. She had lymphoma."

"And you accelerated it," Daniel growled, advancing on her step by step. "You moved into my home, you poisoned my wife, you slipped into my bed, and you tried to replace my son with a child bought off the black market to secure thirty percent of my family’s maritime empire."

Vanessa reached behind her back, her fingers finding the brass doorknob. But instead of fleeing, her face hardened into something cold, vicious, and feral.

"You're too late, Daniel," she spat, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper.

"What did you do?" Daniel demanded, a sudden, blinding panic seizing his chest.

"You think Marcus Reed was just an adoption broker?" she laughed, a dry, mocking sound. "Marcus has been downstairs in the wine cellar for the last twenty minutes, disabling your estate's main security console and cutting the cellular booster lines. You think Liam Vance is coming to save you? Marcus jammed the private radio frequencies on the entire property."

She yanked the study door open and stepped into the hallway.

"And as for your precious Ethan..." she sneered, her eyes gleaming with triumphant malice, "Marcus went to his room five minutes ago to tuck him in."
