Chapter 18 - The Vault of the Silent Ancestors

The gates of St. Jude's Cemetery stood buckled by the wind when Daniel's Range Rover screeched to a halt outside the wrought-iron fence. Daniel had bandaged Detective Miller's shoulder before leaving the manor; the detective had regained consciousness and dialed the State Police tactical unit directly from the master suite. Backup was already rolling up Route 9, but Daniel couldn't wait. He needed the truth from the crypt before the lawyers and federal agents quarantined the site forever.

Daniel carried Ethan through the dripping rows of marble angels and weathered mausoleums, their boots sinking deep into the rain-soaked turf. At the highest point of the bluff, overlooking the raging Hudson River, stood the Blackwood Chapel—an imposing Gothic structure of dark granite, its stone gargoyles leering down into the abyss.

Daniel used the heavy brass key recovered from Evelyn’s silk gown to unlock the chapel’s heavy oak doors. Inside, the air was stagnant, heavy with the scent of dried frankincense, stone dust, and centuries of preserved sorrow.

They descended the spiral stone steps into the subterranean crypt. There, embedded in the granite floor in front of Sarah’s newly carved marble tomb, was a heavy vault door forged from titanium and reinforced steel. It looked entirely alien amidst the medieval architecture—a modern, high-security safe installed by Sarah’s own private security contractors during her final months of life.

Beside the digital locking mechanism were two biometric interfaces: an optical scanner and a dual-fingerprint pad.

Daniel knelt beside Ethan. "Put your hand here, buddy."

Ethan placed his small palm against the chilled glass plate. The scanner emitted a soft, blue hue, humming as the laser mapped the unique ridges of his skin.

Daniel placed his right palm against the secondary plate.

With a deep, pneumatic hiss, the heavy circular bolts retracted. The massive steel door swung open on balanced hydraulic hinges, revealing the illuminated interior of Sarah's final sanctuary.
