Chapter 14 - The Voice from the Crypt

The emergency tunnel was empty. The intruder had slipped through the municipal subway maintenance vents and vanished into the rush-hour crowds of Lower Manhattan like smoke.
Back at the 1st Precinct, Ava sat in an interrogation briefing room, surrounded by dozens of archival photographs pinned to a corkboard. In the center was a black-and-white portrait of Julian Mercer taken twenty years ago: tall, broad-shouldered, with the same piercing ice-blue eyes as Nicholas, but with a mouth twisted into a perpetual sneer of entitlement.
"Julian Mercer was the original heir," Vance explained, tossing a thick, yellowed dossier onto the table. "In 2012, your father discovered Julian was laundering cartel money through Mercer Global’s overseas shipping terminals. Nicholas gave him a choice: sign over his shares and disappear forever, or spend thirty years in ADX Florence. Julian signed. Three months later, his car went off a cliff in the French Alps. The body was burned beyond dental identification. The French authorities closed the case as an accidental fatality."
"Except Nicholas never believed he was dead," Ava realized, staring at the photo. "That's why Dad wrote the note. *'If Graham touches the boy, burn the vault. He is not working alone.'* Graham Whitlock was Julian’s inside man all along. Graham was Julian's legal pawn to reclaim the Mercer fortune!"
"And with Graham dead," Vance added grimly, "Julian doesn't need legal maneuvers anymore. He’s cutting through the bloodline. If Oliver dies, and you die, the Mercer ancestral trust defaults to the surviving collateral heir—or a blind trust controlled by Julian's shell companies in the Caymans."
Suddenly, Ava’s burner phone vibrated on the metal desk.
The screen displayed an unknown satellite number.
Vance immediately motioned for the cyber-forensic tech sitting at the corner console to initiate a trace. "Put it on speaker," Vance whispered. "Keep him talking for at least forty seconds."
Ava swallowed the bile rising in her throat, swiped the screen, and placed the phone on the table. "Hello?"
A low, gravelly chuckle filtered through the speaker, accompanied by the faint hiss of static and the sound of coastal wind.
"You always had Nicholas’s stubborn chin, Ava," the voice purred. It was cultured, smooth, but laced with a venomous calm that made the hairs on Ava's arms stand up. "Even when you were six years old, refusing to apologize for breaking that crystal decanter in the Hamptons. Nicholas protected you then. But Nicholas isn't here anymore."
"Julian," Ava said, forcing her voice to remain rock steady, even as her fingernails dug into the palms of her hands. "You killed Graham. You tried to murder a two-year-old child."
"Graham was a greedy fool who lacked finesse," the voice replied dismissively. "He thought tossing the boy off a balcony was theatrical. I told him to make it look like a crib death. SIDS is so much cleaner, don't you think? But Graham wanted the drama. He botched it, and now he has paid the market price for failure."
"The NYPD has your face on every port, airport, and bridge in the tri-state area," Vance shouted at the phone. "You're trapped, Julian!"
Julian laughed—a cold, hollow sound that echoed through the small room.
"Trapped? Detective, I have been living in the shadows of this city for twelve years. I own the docks Nicholas thought he ruled. And while you two were wasting your morning chasing empty deposit boxes on Wall Street, you left the nursery door wide open."
Ava’s heart stopped. "What did you do to Elena and Oliver?!"
"Call your safehouse, Ava. Ask the two state troopers guarding the gate why they haven't checked in for the last fifteen minutes. The Mercer empire was stolen from me. And tonight... the Mercer debt will be paid in full."

The line went dead.
