Chapter 8 - The Velvet Trap

The private ambulance bay in the subterranean garage of St. Jude’s was shrouded in concrete shadows and exhaust fumes.

At 2:45 AM, a sleek, unmarked medical van backed into Bay 4, its diesel engine rumbling low against the retaining walls. Graham Whitlock stepped out of the passenger side, flanked by two private paramedics who moved with the stiff, mechanical precision of hired mercenaries rather than medical professionals.

Graham carried a leather briefcase. His tailored coat was dry, his hair immaculate. He checked his platinum Patek Philippe watch, clearly annoyed by the delay.

"Dr. Morris should have the boy down by now," Graham snapped to the driver. "Get the doors open. We need to be across the state line before sunrise."

"Going somewhere, Graham?"

The voice echoed from the shadowed corridor leading to the service elevators.

Graham turned slowly. Ava Mercer stood in the center of the bay, her wet trench coat hanging loose, her hands thrust deep into her pockets. She was entirely alone. No police cruisers, no flashing lights, no detectives.

Graham let out a soft, mocking sigh. "Ava. You really have the survival instincts of a moth. Did you honestly think you could run from Mercer Manor and just wait for me here?"

"Elena knows," Ava said, her voice cutting through the damp chill of the garage. "She saw the files from Geneva, Graham. She saw the photographs of Charlotte and her little girl. The wedding is off. The trust transfer is canceled."

Graham’s expression hardened. The veneer of civilization peeled away completely, revealing the cold reptile underneath. He didn't ask questions. He didn't plead his case. He simply set the briefcase on the hood of the van and signaled to the two men behind him.

"It doesn't matter what Elena knows," Graham whispered. "Elena is an emotional wreck who just signed a full power of attorney to my legal trust two hours ago in exchange for me managing this PR crisis. By the time she tries to revoke it in court, the funds will have cleared five jurisdictions that don't recognize American subpoenas."

"And Oliver?" Ava asked, her voice trembling slightly. "What were you going to do to him on the way upstate?"

Graham smiled—a dead, horrific stretching of his lips. "Secondary drowning, Ava. It’s a very tragic medical reality. Sometimes children inhale water, appear fine for twelve hours, and then their lungs fill with fluid while they sleep in the back of an ambulance. A terrible tragedy. Two devastating losses for poor Elena in less than a year. She’ll need to be committed to an institution for her own safety, of course. Leaving me to manage the estate alone."

He stepped toward her, pulling a small, silenced automatic pistol from his inner coat pocket.

"You should have stayed in New York, Ava. You could have lived on your little trust fund. But you just couldn't let Nicholas Mercer’s ghost rest, could you?"

May you like

"I didn't bring my father's ghost," Ava said softly, taking a single step backward into the light of the overhead sodium lamp. "I brought the New York City Police Department."
