Chapter 26 - The Poison in the Milk

The sound of car doors slamming in the gravel driveway cut through the rain-drenched night like the cocking of rifles.

Ava did not panic. The shock that had paralyzed her moments ago burned away, replaced by an absolute, icy clarity. She had lived under Nicholas Mercer’s roof for twenty-two years; she had learned how monsters thought before she learned how to balance a checkbook.

She sprinted across the library, scooped Oliver into her arms, and backed into the service alcove beneath the grand staircase.

"Ollie," she whispered, her face inches from the boy’s terrified eyes. "You remember the game we played at the lake? The quiet fox game?"

The boy nodded slowly, tears welling in his wide, dark eyes, but he pressed his lips tightly together. He didn't make a sound.

The heavy front door of the brownstone groaned as a key slipped smoothly into the brass deadbolt.

The lock turned with a soft, lubricated *click*.

The door swung inward, letting in a gust of freezing wind and sheets of driving rain. A slender figure stepped into the foyer, silhouetted against the sweeping headlights of the vehicles outside.

It was Elena.

She wasn't bleeding. Her jeans were clean, free of bullet holes or shrapnel tears. In her right hand, she held a silenced SIG Sauer; in her left, she carried Oliver’s favorite stuffed rabbit, which had been left behind in the pediatric lab.

"Ava?" Elena’s voice was soft, melodic, dripping with counterfeit warmth. "Ava, it’s me! The police drove them off! Frank managed to extract me before the fire spread! Where are you? Where is Oliver?"

Ava stepped out from the shadows of the alcove, her snub-nosed revolver leveled directly at the center of Elena’s forehead.

"Step forward and you die," Ava said, her voice dropping into a register so cold it stopped Elena in her tracks.

Elena froze, her eyes widening in apparent shock. "Ava! What are you doing? It’s me! Put the gun down, you’re in shock—"

"The master bedroom balcony," Ava interrupted, her finger tightening on the trigger until the cylinder began to rotate. "The day Oliver fell. You were supposed to be changing his linens. You were the only one who had the code to disarm the perimeter sensors on the terrace."

Elena’s face flickered. For a fraction of a second, the mask of the devoted, terrified nanny slipped, revealing the cold, calculating operative beneath.

"Ava, you’re listening to Nicholas," Elena said, her voice shifting, losing its frantic pitch, becoming flat and pragmatic. "He’s in your head. He’s a psychopath who views everyone—even his own blood—as assets on a balance sheet."

"And you?" Ava demanded. "What did Julian offer you to let that floor blow out? Did he promise to wipe your father’s gambling debts? Did he offer you a seat at the high table?"

"Julian offered me my life!" Elena snapped, stepping closer, ignoring the gun pointed at her skull. "Do you have any idea what Nicholas did to my family? He took everything my father built! He destroyed us to buy a railway corridor through Pennsylvania! Oliver isn't a child, Ava—he’s an abomination! He’s a biological cipher Nicholas created to live forever! If you give that boy to Nicholas, you’re handing the world to a monster who cannot die!"

From the pocket of her tactical jacket, Elena withdrew a small amber glass vial and dropped it onto the floor. It rolled across the parquet, stopping at Ava’s feet.

"That was in the baby formula Nicholas’s personal courier sent to the nursery every Tuesday," Elena said, her voice trembling with genuine hatred. "It’s an immunosuppressant mixed with a neural inhibitor. Nicholas wasn't just cloning himself—he was priming Oliver’s central nervous system for an experimental consciousness transfer protocol developed in Shanghai. He doesn't want Oliver to grow up. He wants to step into Oliver’s body before his own organs fail from the pancreatic cancer eating him alive!"

Ava’s breath caught in her throat. The pieces of the grotesque puzzle fell into place with sickening velocity.

*He threw the boy because he knows what is written in the bone.*

Nicholas hadn't disappeared to protect the boy. He had staged his death to force the crisis, to draw Julian out, and to prepare the final vessel for his own resurrection.

Suddenly, the front door behind Elena burst inward with thunderous force.

A tall man in a navy bespoke suit, soaked with rain, his face illuminated by the lightning outside, stepped across the threshold.

Julian Mercer smiled, holding a silver-plated Beretta in his leather-gloved hand.

"Thank you for leading me to the prize, Elena," Julian purred, his eyes locking onto Oliver. "Now, family reunion’s over."
