Chapter 28 - The Will Behind the Mirror

The colossal high-definition screens lining the perimeter of the Mercer Grand Ballroom flickered simultaneously.
The smooth, ambient corporate graphics depicting rising stock yields and real estate portfolios vanished into a blast of harsh white static. The string quartet stopped playing in mid-measure as the master audio system let out an ear-piercing feedback squeal.
Julian Mercer froze at the podium, his hand hovering over the mahogany lectern, his eyes narrowing into venomous slits.
"Technical crew, cut the feed," Julian commanded calmly into his lapel mic, trying to maintain his immaculate executive composure. "We have a minor network glitch."
The screens did not go black.
Instead, a time-stamped video appeared, rendering in crystalline 4K resolution. The date in the upper corner read: *August 14th, 2:14 PM*—the exact minute Oliver had plunged from the second-floor master suite.
A collective gasp swept through the five hundred high-society guests in the ballroom.
On the eighty-foot screens, the camera angle was clear, filmed from an untraceable thermal pinhole lens embedded in the master suite chandelier. The footage showed the toddler, Oliver, playing with a small red plastic toy near the edge of the cantilevered glass terrace.
Then, the double doors of the suite swung open.
Julian Mercer entered the room. He was wearing the identical navy bespoke suit he was currently wearing at the podium. He walked unhurriedly toward the glass balustrade. As the boy turned with a bright, innocent smile, Julian reached into his pocket, pulled out a flat, red transmitter, and placed it beneath the heel of his Oxford shoe.
He stepped down.
A blinding flash of micro-explosives severed the structural titanium bracket beneath the tempered glass. The terrace floor gave way into empty space.
The footage showed Oliver’s tiny hands flailing wildly as he plummeted toward the pool eighty feet below, and it showed Julian standing at the edge, looking down with cold, emotionless satisfaction before carefully sliding the crushed transmitter back into his breast pocket.
The ballroom exploded into bedlam. Wine glasses shattered on the parquet floor; board members stood up in outrage, shouting over one another; camera flashes from the press corps lit the room in a blinding tempest of white light.
"Shut it off! Cut the main power to the building!" Julian roared into the microphone, his polished veneer shattering into naked, feral panic.
High above the chaos, in the shadows of the VIP gallery, Ava stepped out from behind the two-way glass, stepping onto the iron catwalk overlooking the ballroom. Her voice, amplified through the master emergency intercom, cut through the screaming crowd like a guillotine.
"The boy survived the fall, Julian!" Ava shouted down into the abyss. "And now the whole world knows you’re not a CEO. You’re a murderer."
Julian looked up, his face twisted in psychotic fury. He reached inside his tailored tuxedo jacket and pulled his silver Beretta into plain view of five hundred witnesses and thirty media cameras.
"You think this saves him, Ava?" Julian screamed, his voice cracking through the pandemonium. "You think you won? You have no idea what’s standing behind you!"

A cold, heavy hand clamped down onto Ava’s shoulder from behind.
