Chapter 16 - The Red Toy in the Dark

The wooden cellar stairs creaked beneath their weight as they descended into the subterranean darkness of the lodge. The air here was damp, smelling of stone, old wine, and iron.

Vance’s flashlight cut through the blackness, illuminating row after row of dusty wine racks, vintage champagne crates, and heavy oak barrels.

"Elena..." Ava whispered, her voice trembling.

A faint, muffled sob echoed from the far corner of the cellar.

Ava broke into a run, ignoring Vance’s hissed warning. Rounding a stack of French oak barrels, Ava found Elena collapsed against a stone pillar. Her hands were bound behind her back with industrial zip-ties, her mouth gagged with heavy silver duct tape. Her silk blouse was torn and stained with dark crimson, her forehead bruised where she had evidently been struck with the butt of a weapon.

"Elena!" Ava fell to her knees, tearing the duct tape from her stepmother’s lips. "Where is he?! Where is Oliver?!"

Elena gasped for air, weeping hysterically, her eyes rolling in blind terror. "He took him, Ava! He took him! I tried to fight him... I bit his hand... but he threw me down the stairs! He said... he said Nicholas’s blood had to drown where it all began!"

"Where it began?" Vance knelt down, slicing through the zip-ties with a pocket knife. "What does that mean, Elena?! Where was he taking the child?!"

"The old boathouse..." Elena sobbed, clutching Ava’s coat with bruised, trembling hands. "The abandoned Mercer shipyard on the Hudson... Nicholas and Julian’s grandfather built the first cargo barges there in 1952. Julian said he was going to burn the lineage to ashes."

Ava looked down at the stone floor near Elena’s feet.

Lying in a puddle of muddy rainwater was Oliver’s favorite miniature red sports car. The same toy that had rolled across the terrace pool deck yesterday morning when the boy fell. The same toy Nicholas had bought him for his second birthday.

Its tiny plastic wheels were smeared with fresh mud.

"He was here less than ten minutes ago," Ava said, standing up, a cold, lethal calm suddenly washing over her panic. The fear that had paralyzed her for days vanished, replaced by an incandescent, terrifying clarity. "He's not running away. He’s waiting for us."

"Ava, we wait for tactical reinforcements," Vance commanded, grabbing Ava’s shoulder with iron grip. "Julian is an ex-special forces operative who has lived off-grid for a decade. He wants you there. It’s an execution ground."

"If we wait fifteen minutes, Oliver will be at the bottom of the Hudson River!" Ava shoved Vance’s hand away, her eyes flashing with pure fire. "You can wait for the cavalry, Detective. I’m getting my brother."

Ava sprinted back up the cellar stairs into the storm.
