Chapter 19 - The Plunge and the Fire

Everything dissolved into terrifying, slow-motion kinetic chaos.
Detective Vance didn't reach for her dropped rifle; she dove to her right, pulling a concealed snub-nosed backup revolver from an ankle holster beneath her soaked trousers.
*BANG!*
The shot rang out like thunder inside the metal dry dock. The bullet struck Julian’s right shoulder, spinning him violently backward.
The combat knife slipped from Julian's grasp, but as he fell, his spasming hand pulled the trigger of the industrial flare gun.
*FWOOSH!*
A blinding, phosphorescent white-hot magnesium projectile arced through the torrential rain, striking the fuel-soaked timbers of the dry dock floor. Instantly, an apocalyptic wall of yellow and orange flames erupted, roaring twenty feet into the air, consuming the wooden pilings and cutting off the escape route in a terrifying blast of heat.
"Oliver!" Ava screamed.
As Julian crashed onto the wheelhouse deck, his flailing boots kicked the rotting wooden railing. The weakened timber snapped with the sound of a gunshot.
Oliver plummeted.
"NO!"
Ava didn't think. She didn't calculate the height, the jagged rusty scrap metal protruding from the water, or the raging current below. For the second time in twenty-four hours, she threw herself into the void to save her brother.
She lunged over the edge of the gangplank, diving headfirst toward the black water.
Her fingers caught the trailing nylon rope just eighteen inches above the swirling river.
The violent jolt dislocated Ava’s left shoulder with a sickening *pop*. Agony ripped through her chest, white-hot and blinding, but she clamped her right hand around the soaked yellow rain poncho, pulling Oliver against her chest with every ounce of strength in her soul.
*SPLASH!*
They hit the freezing, churning Hudson River together.
The shock of the icy water knocked the breath from Ava’s lungs. The current was an unstoppable freight train, dragging them downward into the pitch-black abyss. Debris, rusted rebar, and chunks of burning timber swirled around them in the murky depths.
Oliver was struggling, choking on river water.
Ava kicked violently with her legs, fighting the current, using her one good arm to keep Oliver’s head pressed against her neck. She breached the surface, gasping for air, choking on river foam and acrid black smoke.
Above them, the dry dock was an inferno.
The rusted cranes were groaning, their structural integrity melting in the thousand-degree heat of the fuel fire. On the burning deck of the tugboat, Detective Vance was locked in a brutal, hand-to-hand struggle with Julian Mercer, wrestling for control of the fallen revolver amid a shower of falling sparks and collapsing iron rafters.
"Ava!" Vance screamed, her voice barely audible over the roaring inferno. "Swim to the south pier! Get him out!"
Ava kicked toward the rotting wooden pilings of the south dock, dragging Oliver’s shivering, coughing body through the freezing waves. Her dislocated shoulder felt like it had been dipped in acid. Every stroke sent waves of nausea through her skull.
Finally, her right hand clamped onto the slimy, barnacle-encrusted timber of an old ladder.
Using her teeth to hold the collar of Oliver’s poncho, Ava dragged herself and the child up the rungs, collapsing onto the splintered planks of the pier, vomiting river water, weeping from sheer exhaustion and pain.
Oliver lay beside her, coughing violently, crying, shivering uncontrollably—but breathing.
"I've got you," Ava sobbed, pulling the little boy into her lap, wrapping her soaking coat around his freezing body. "I've got you, Oliver. You're safe."
Behind her, a catastrophic explosion shook the very bedrock of the riverbank.
Ava turned, shielding Oliver with her body.
The tugboat's secondary fuel tanks had detonated. A massive fireball erupted into the stormy sky, blowing the wheelhouse apart in a blizzard of splintered wood and twisted steel. The heavy iron crane above the dry dock buckled, collapsing directly into the flaming basin with an apocalyptic roar of screeching metal.
