Chapter 27 - The Midnight Gala at Mercer Tower

"Julian!" Elena shouted, spinning around and raising her weapon.

*Bang!*

Julian didn't hesitate. A single round from his silver Beretta punched through Elena’s chest before she could clear leather. The nanny gasped, a spray of dark arterial blood hitting the wallpaper as she collapsed backward onto the antique coat rack, her gun clattering to the floor.

"Disloyal employees are such a dreadful liability," Julian said smoothly, stepping over her twitching body without looking down. Behind him, four private security operators fanned out into the foyer, their rifles raised.

Ava didn't fire at Julian. She knew the mechanics of armor-piercing rounds against a three-inch revolver. Instead, she spun on her heel, grabbed Oliver by the collar, and slammed the heavy oak door of the library shut, throwing the iron deadbolt into place.

"Ava, open the door," Julian called through the thick wood, his footsteps unhurried, agonizingly calm. "You can’t keep him in the dark forever. Tonight is the annual Mercer Global Shareholders Gala at the Tower. In two hours, the board declares Nicholas legally deceased in absentia. If I present Oliver’s death certificate, the court unseals the reserve stock. I become executive chairman."

"You blew the balcony off the master suite!" Ava screamed through the wood, dragging the heavy mahogany desk against the door to brace it. "You rigged the glass with micro-explosives! The boy saw you step on the detonator!"

Outside, Julian chuckled softly. "A child’s testimony against the incoming CEO of a Fortune 50 conglomerate? No prosecutor in New York would touch it. But you... you’re his sister. Or his daughter. Or whatever sick joke our father engineered in that Petri dish. If you walk out with him now, I’ll let you keep the trust funds in Switzerland. You can disappear. You can have a life, Ava."

"Go to hell, Julian!"

"Break it down," Julian ordered his men coldly.

The first shotgun blast chewed through the center of the oak door, blowing splinters across the library.

Ava didn't wait for the second blast. She scooped Oliver into her arms, sprinted to the bay window overlooking the rear alley, and hurled a heavy brass reading lamp through the leaded glass.

The glass shattered into a thousand glittering shards. Ava wrapped her coat tightly around Oliver, climbed onto the sill, and leaped into the torrential darkness, landing hard on the fire escape of the adjacent brick warehouse.

Two hours later, the apex of Mercer Tower soared eighty-four floors into the storm clouds above Manhattan, a monolithic needle of black obsidian and neon light.

Inside the Grand Ballroom, the city’s financial elite drank champagne under crystal chandeliers. Diamonds sparkled; tuxedos rustled; classical violin music masked the cutthroat deals being whispered in the corners.

At the back of the VIP balcony, standing behind a two-way mirrored partition, Ava watched the crowd.

She was no longer wearing the bloodstained leather jacket. She had stolen a black evening gown from an upscale boutique three blocks away, her damp hair pinned up in an elegant, severe chignon. Beneath the heavy silk folds of the dress, her right hand rested on the butt of the .38.

Oliver was strapped securely inside a high-end designer stroller hidden in the service pantry behind the balcony, watched over by an old family butler whose loyalty to Nicholas had never wavered.

On the main stage beneath the chandeliers, Julian Mercer stepped up to the podium, adjusting his microphone. The crowd fell silent.

"Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed members of the board," Julian began, his voice radiating smooth, unshakeable authority. "Nine months ago, we lost a visionary. Nicholas Mercer was the bedrock of this institution. Tonight, with a heavy heart, the probate court has officially ratified his passing. The future of Mercer Global begins tonight."

Behind the mirror, Ava pulled the encrypted flash drive from her clutch.

"Not tonight, Julian," she whispered.

She turned and plugged the drive directly into the master broadcast terminal in the control room.
