Chapter 18 - The Price of the Empire

Detective Vance stepped forward into the basin, keeping her rifle pointed at Julian’s chest, but Julian didn't flinch. He pressed the serrated blade deeper into the frayed rope. Oliver let out a terrified wail, his small boots dangling over the churning, debris-choked water.
"Drop it, Detective," Ava said softly, her heart bleeding at the sight of her brother's terror. "Drop it now."
Vance hesitated, her jaw clenched so tightly a muscle twitched in her cheek, then lowered the AR-15 and tossed it into the mud. Ava slowly bent down, setting her handgun beside it, and kicked both weapons into the water basin.
Julian smiled—a hideous, triumph-drenched grin.
"Good girl, Ava. Obedient. Just like your mother before Nicholas bought her soul."
"Let the boy go, Julian," Ava said, stepping toward the rusted gangplank that led to the tugboat's deck. "You wanted Mercer Global. You wanted the offshore accounts. Graham signed everything over to your dummy corporations before he died. Take the money and leave. Oliver is two years old. He knows nothing!"
"He knows his name," Julian spat, his eyes blazing with madness. "He carries the blood of the brother who stripped me of my birthright! Nicholas thought he was so righteous. He banished me to the gutter, erased my name from the corporate history, and built an empire on my patents!"
"You laundered money for murderers!" Vance yelled through the rain. "Nicholas saved this family from ruin!"
"Nicholas betrayed me!" Julian roared, the veins in his neck bulging. "And he died begging for mercy when his yacht went down! Did you know that, Ava? Graham didn't set those charges on Nicholas's boat off Nantucket. I did. I stood on the chase boat with a detonator, watching your father burn while he screamed your name into the radio!"
Ava felt the world spin. The grief and rage that had lived in her chest for nine months coalesced into a blazing, suffocating fury. "You killed him."
"I reclaimed my balance sheet," Julian sneered, leveling the heavy orange flare gun directly at Ava’s chest. "And now, the final transaction. You see this dry dock? Beneath your feet are fifty gallons of aviation fuel Graham stashed here last month. When I fire this flare into the bilge, the basin ignites, the cables snap, and the Mercer line ends in a magnificent funeral pyre."
"Julian, no!" Ava cried, taking a desperate step onto the slippery gangplank.
"Say goodbye to your brother, Ava."
