Chapter 14 - Blood Ties and Secret Wills

"She's serving fifteen years in a federal penitentiary!" Julian roared, keeping his gun leveled at Evelyn’s forehead as Clara emerged from the nursery, trembling, her fingernails digging into Maya’s blanket. "How could she possibly have your daughter?"
Evelyn dropped the silver tray. The crystal glass shattered on the floor, spilling not blood, but a rancid concoction of vintage wine and chopped horsehair—a grotesque mockery of the torture Clara had suffered months ago. Evelyn collapsed to her knees, sobbing violently.
"Victoria doesn't need to be outside to rule the world, Julian!" Evelyn gasped, choking on her tears. "She doesn't even need her frozen accounts. Three days before the FBI raided the penthouse, she executed a codicil. A secret will held in escrow by a private cartel in Zurich."
Julian stepped closer, his jaw locked. "What codicil?"
"You think you were an only child," Evelyn stammered, looking up through mascara-stained eyes. "You think you were the sole heir to the Sterling metallurgical empire. But Victoria spent thirty years cleaning up your father’s messes."
Clara felt the room spin. "Julian's father died in a plane crash twenty-five years ago."
"His plane was sabotaged, Clara!" Evelyn cried. "By Victoria herself! Because your father had a second family, Julian. A mistress in Boston. And a boy. A boy born three weeks before you."
Julian froze, the barrel of his gun wavering for the first time in his life. "You're lying. My father adored my mother. He tolerated her cruelty because he was weak."
"He was terrified of her!" Evelyn reached into her trench coat. Julian cocked the weapon, but Evelyn slowly pulled out an iPad wrapped in bubble wrap. She pressed the screen, illuminating the dark hallway with a cold blue glare.
On the screen was a birth certificate registered in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, dated thirty-two years ago. The father’s name was unmistakably *Arthur Sterling*.
The mother's name was *Eleanor Vance*—Evelyn’s older sister.
"Your brother's name is Charles," Evelyn whispered, looking up at Julian with terrified reverence. "And Victoria didn't put me in charge of the courier network. Charles did. He’s not coming for the money, Julian. He’s coming because Victoria promised him the one thing Arthur denied him."

"What?" Clara choked out.
"The Sterling bloodline. And Maya is the only legitimate female heir born to this family in ninety years."
