Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The aftermath was swift and devastating.

By midnight, news of Victoria Sterling’s arrest was the lead headline on every major news network across the globe. The leaked video from the vanity room had already amassed over thirty million views within hours, sparking nationwide outrage. Demonstrators were already gathering outside the gates of Sterling Consolidated headquarters in Manhattan, demanding accountability.

Dr. Arthur Sterling had been apprehended at JFK Airport attempting to board a private flight to Zurich, carrying half a million dollars in unregistered bearer bonds and encrypted hard drives containing records of the illicit drugs he had provided to Victoria. Facing decades in federal prison, Arthur had turned state’s evidence within thirty minutes of his arrest, confirming the full extent of the conspiracy to induce Clara’s labor and seize custody of the heir.

In the early hours of the morning, Julian convened an emergency virtual meeting of the Sterling Consolidated Board of Directors from his private study.

The board members, terrified of the catastrophic stock crash and public boycotts, voted unanimously: Victoria Sterling was stripped of all titles, voting shares, and executive authority, expelled permanently from the company she had spent her life ruling.

Julian stood before the board via video conference, his voice carrying an authority they had never seen before.

"The generation-skipping trust is now active," Julian informed them coldly. "Under the terms established by Arthur Sterling Senior, with Victoria permanently disqualified due to felony misconduct, full controlling interest transfers to my family. Tomorrow morning, thirty percent of Sterling Consolidated’s liquid reserves will be redirected into maternal health initiatives and domestic abuse shelters across this state."

"Julian," Eleanor Sterling spoke up, her voice trembling through the screen. "What will happen to the estate? To the family name?"

"The estate is being sold," Julian answered flatly. "And the Sterling name will stand for what my grandfather intended—or it will cease to exist entirely."

He severed the connection.

Julian closed his laptop, leaning back in his chair as the first rays of dawn began to peek over the horizon. The weight of thirty-one years of psychological chains felt as though it had been violently ripped from his shoulders.

The study door clicked open.

Clara walked in, wearing a warm, oversized cardigan. Her hair was softly brushed down over the bandages, her face tired but at peace.

Julian immediately stood up, walking across the room to wrap his arms around her. He rested his forehead against hers, closing his eyes, inhaling the sweet, clean scent of her skin.

"How are you feeling?" he asked softly, his hand resting tenderly over her stomach.

"I can breathe," Clara whispered, tears of relief shining in her eyes. "For the first time since we moved into this house, Julian... I can actually breathe."

Suddenly, Clara gasped, her hand tightening around Julian’s forearm.

Julian tensed, panic flaring in his eyes. "What is it? Is it pain? Is it the baby?"

Clara looked down at her feet. A puddle of clear liquid had formed on the hardwood floor.

A sharp, powerful contraction seized her abdomen, causing her knees to buckle slightly. Julian caught her instantly, scooping her up into his arms.

"Mateo!" Julian roared toward the hallway, his voice ringing through the empty mansion. "Get the car! It’s time!"
