Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Matriarch

Screams, shouts, and the sounds of chairs overturning echoed through the cavernous hall.

Senator Davenport stood up, his face purple with outrage. "This is monstrous! Someone call the police! Arrest that woman!"

Reporters from the national business press who had been invited for the centennial announcement immediately began snapping photos, flashbulbs exploding like strobes around the stage. The scandal of the century had just detonated in real time.

Victoria stood alone under the searing white spotlights. Her chest heaved, her emerald gown suddenly looking like a prisoner’s shroud. The aristocratic dignity she had cultivated for thirty years dissolved into raw, cornered madness.

"It’s a lie!" she shrieked into the podium microphone, her voice cracking into a shrill screech. "It’s a deepfake! Julian engineered it! That peasant manipulated him! She wants our money! She seduced him to steal our empire!"

Julian stepped forward. He walked calmly up the stage stairs, taking the center spotlight. He took the wireless microphone from its cradle.

"It is not a deepfake, Mother," Julian’s voice rang out, steady, authoritative, and utterly remorseless. "The raw footage, along with three years of encrypted surveillance logs from your personal server, was delivered to the United States Attorney’s Office and the FBI Child Exploitation and Domestic Crimes Task Force two hours ago."

Victoria staggered back as if Julian had physically struck her. "You... you went to the feds? Against your own family?"

"You stopped being family the moment you put poison in my wife’s body," Julian said, his eyes drilling into her.

Clara slowly walked up the stage stairs to stand beside her husband.

With deliberate, steady hands, Clara reached up to her braided hair. One by one, she pulled out the diamond pins. She unwrapped the thick chestnut braid, letting her hair fall loose over her shoulders.

Then, she peeled away the sterile white gauze pad on the right side of her scalp.

The front row gasped in horror.

Under the brutal glare of the stage lights, the raw, bloody laceration where a fist-sized clump of hair had been violently torn out was laid bare for four hundred witnesses and fifty camera lenses to see. Clara’s jaw was still stained with deep, mottled purple bruising.

"Is this a deepfake, Victoria?" Clara asked, her voice trembling but clear, amplified through Julian’s microphone. "Is the blood on your hands a deepfake?"

Victoria looked around the room. She looked at her sister-in-law Eleanor, who turned her back in disgust. She looked at the corporate board members, men who had bowed to her for decades, now glaring at her with utter contempt and revulsion.

"You ungrateful little whore!" Victoria snapped.

Losing every shred of sanity, Victoria lunged across the stage, her manicured fingers curled into claws, aiming straight for Clara’s throat. "I'll kill you! I'll kill you both!"

Before she could touch Clara, Mateo leaped onto the stage, tackling Victoria to the floor. The matriarch of the Sterling dynasty crashed hard against the polished hardwood, screaming obscenities as two armed federal agents in windbreakers, accompanied by local state troopers, marched through the grand ballroom doors.

"Victoria Sterling," Special Agent Miller announced, pulling Victoria’s arms behind her back and clicking heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, aggravated domestic battery, corporate wire fraud, and distribution of controlled substances."

The ballroom was a tempest of flashing cameras and shouting voices as Victoria was hauled to her feet. Her silver hair was disheveled, her gown torn at the shoulder, her face twisted in a mask of unbridled hatred.

As the agents dragged her down the center aisle of her own ballroom, past the horrified elite of American society, Victoria locked eyes with Julian and Clara.

"You will burn in hell for this, Julian!" she screamed, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. "You have destroyed the Sterling name!"

Julian wrapped his arm tightly around Clara, shielding her from the spectacle.

May you like

"No, Mother," Julian said softly, loud enough for the reporters to hear. "I didn't destroy the name. I ended your reign."
