Chapter 6 - The Keynote Address

The lights in the grand ballroom began to dim, drawing the chatter of four hundred guests to an expectant murmur. Spotlight operators bathed the center stage in brilliant white light as Victoria stepped behind the lucite podium, flanked by two towering twenty-foot LED screens bearing the golden crest of Sterling Consolidated.
The crowd erupted into thunderous applause.
Victoria raised both hands with practiced grace, a picture of dignity and imperial authority. "Thank you. Thank you, my dearest friends, colleagues, and esteemed partners."
Clara and Julian stood in the front row, directly beneath the glare of the spotlights. Clara’s hand remained entwined with Julian’s, their fingers locked together like vice grips.
"A century ago," Victoria began, her rich, modulated voice carrying through the acoustic perfection of the hall, "my late grandfather-in-law founded Sterling Consolidated on a singular, inviolable principle: Legacy. A legacy is not merely the wealth we accumulate in our vaults. It is the character we forge in our private lives. It is the strength of our bloodline, the purity of our commitments, and the moral bedrock of our family."
Murmurs of approval rippled through the audience. Several older board members nodded solemnly.
"Tonight, as we look to the next hundred years," Victoria continued, her gaze drifting down to Julian, "I had intended to announce a transition of leadership. To pass the torch to my beloved son, Julian, and celebrate the coming generation."
She paused, letting a theatrical shadow of sorrow cross her face. She dabbed delicately at the corner of her eye with a lace handkerchief.
"However... true leadership often demands painful sacrifices. Over the past several weeks, our family has been tested by deep personal tragedy. My lovely daughter-in-law, Clara, whom we welcomed with open arms into our home, has been fighting a severe, debilitating psychological illness. An illness that has manifested in unpredictable hostility, erratic behavior, and deep paranoia."
The ballroom gasped. Heads turned instantly toward Clara, who stood motionless, her face like carved stone.
Victoria looked directly down at Clara, her voice dripping with venomous pity. "It pains me to say that for the protection of my unborn grandchild, Clara will be stepping away from public life tonight. Under the guidance of our medical advisors, she will be admitted to the St. Jude Neuropsychiatric Institute upstate to receive the intensive, specialized care she so desperately requires."
A wave of shocked whispers rolled across the room. Several socialites looked at Clara with horrified disgust, stepping back as if her supposed madness were contagious.
Victoria smiled down from the podium, savoring the absolute annihilation of her daughter-in-law’s dignity.
"And now," Victoria declared triumphantly, gesturing to the giant screens behind her, "to honor the enduring strength of the Sterling family through all our trials, please join me in viewing our Centennial retrospective."
Victoria stepped back, turning toward the screens, waiting for the polished corporate video to play.
The ballroom lights went completely dark.
The giant twenty-foot displays flickered.
A high-pitched tone sounded over the state-of-the-art surround sound speakers.
Then, instead of the Sterling corporate montage, the screen exploded into hyper-vivid 4K resolution.
The setting was instantly recognizable to everyone who had ever visited the estate: the private dressing room of the West Wing.

And there, in breathtaking clarity, sat Clara, seven months pregnant, looking quietly into the mirror.
