Chapter 16 - Fractured Vows
The silence that followed was louder than the Pacific surf crashing against the rocks outside. Julian stood motionless, his face drained of all color, staring at the floor as if the earth had opened up beneath him.
Clara took three slow steps toward him, Maya sleeping peacefully against her chest. "Julian... tell me you didn't know."
"Clara, of course I didn't—"
"Did you know about the Incapacity Clause?" she demanded, her voice cracking with fury and betrayal. "When we went to the prosecutors, when we handed over the flash drive from the mirror—did you know about Clause Forty-Nine?!"
"No! I swear to God, Clara, I thought we were putting a monster in a cage!" Julian grabbed his hair, his knuckles turning white. "I thought I was saving you! I thought I was freeing us!"
"You handed her the exact key she needed!" Clara screamed, tears of sheer panic and betrayal burning her eyes. "She used my agony! She used my hair, my blood, my humiliation to execute a hostile takeover of her own family trust! And now she’s made us targets for a brother we didn't even know existed!"
"We have to go," Julian said desperately, reaching for her arm. "Clara, please, look at me. Whatever she planned, whatever Charles is doing, we are a family. We survive together."
"Don't touch me," Clara whispered, stepping back.
Suddenly, the iPad on the dining table lit up again. An incoming FaceTime call chimed, displaying an unlisted number from Zurich.
Julian slowly approached the device, exchanging a grim look with Clara. With a trembling thumb, he accepted the video link.

The screen flickered. A man sat in a high-backed leather chair before a wall of glass overlooking the snow-capped Swiss Alps. He was roughly Julian’s age, with the same sharp jawline, the same piercing steel-gray eyes, but his hair was jet black, and across his left cheek ran a faint, jagged scar.
"Hello, little brother," Charles Vance said, his voice smooth as silk and cold as ice. "I believe you have my aunt tied to a kitchen chair."
