Chapter 2 - The Red Velvet Facade

Julian did not strike his mother back. He didn't scream. That was the most terrifying part.

He simply reached into his pocket, retrieved his phone, and tapped the screen once. Then he slipped it back into his pocket and turned his back on Victoria entirely.

"Julian!" Victoria barked, her voice tightening with indignation. "I am speaking to you!"

"Get out," Julian said, his voice dropping to a gravelly, lethal whisper.

"Excuse me?"

Julian knelt beside Clara, gently lifting her off the vanity. He wrapped his arms around her shivering frame, pulling her head into his chest. "I said, get out of our quarters before I have security drag you down the front steps."

Victoria laughed—a sharp, brittle bark. "Security? In my home? Every man on this property is paid by Sterling Consolidated, which means they answer to me. You are letting this lowborn girl turn you into a coward, Julian."

"Victoria," Julian said, not turning around. "If you do not walk out of this door in the next five seconds, I will make sure the Board sees what you just did before sunset."

Victoria sneered, assuming it was an empty bluff. "Do your worst, darling. The Board knows who signs their dividend checks." With a haughty flick of her silk scarf, she turned and marched out, the click of her designer heels fading down the grand marble hallway.

The moment the doors clicked shut, Clara broke down.

A wrenching sob tore from her chest as she curled into the fetal position against Julian’s chest. "Julian... my hair... she ripped... she made me..."

"Hush, my love. I’m here. I’ve got you," Julian whispered frantically, his lips pressed against Clara’s forehead, steering clear of the raw, bloody patch on the right side of her crown. His hands trembled as he brushed the loose strands from her tear-streaked face. "Dr. Evans is on his way. A private team. Not Sterling Medical. Not her doctors."

Clara gripped his lapels, her knuckles bone-white. "She’s going to take our baby, Julian. You didn't hear what she said... she told me I was an incubator. She’s going to take her!"

"Over my dead body," Julian vowed, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched beneath his skin.

Within twenty minutes, an unmarked black Mercedes pulled up to the estate’s private side entrance. Dr. Marcus Evans, Julian’s trusted friend from Harvard Medical and a physician completely independent of the Sterling empire, hurried into the suite with two portable diagnostic kits.

"Lock the doors," Julian commanded his personal bodyguard, Mateo, who stood post at the threshold.

For the next hour, Dr. Evans treated Clara’s wounds in agonizing detail. He cleaned and disinfected the lacerated scalp, applied medical-grade gauze, and checked the baby’s heartbeat using a portable Doppler.

The room fell quiet, filled only with the rapid, rhythmic *thump-thump-thump* of the unborn girl's heart.

Clara wept softly with relief. "She's okay... she's still okay."

"The baby's heart rate is elevated due to maternal distress, but her vital signs are stable," Dr. Evans said grimly, packing away the Doppler wand. He looked up at Julian, his expression severe. "However, Clara has multiple contusions along her jawline, petechiae on her inner lips from forced foreign object insertion, and significant tissue trauma to the parietal scalp. Julian... this is felonious assault. If you don't report this, she is not safe in this house."

"She won't be in this house much longer," Julian replied, his voice dead and hollow.

"What are you going to do?" Clara asked, clutching a blanket around her shoulders. "She controls the trust fund, Julian. She controls the family lawyers, the judges, the district attorney. If we just run, she'll file emergency custody the second the baby is born!"

Julian walked over to the gilded vanity. He reached past the shattered perfume bottles and picked up the heavy, ornate silver clock Victoria had gifted them on their wedding day.

He pressed his thumb into the hidden release mechanism on the base. The ornate silver backing clicked open, revealing a micro-lithium battery, a high-gain omnidirectional microphone, and a 4K pinhole camera lens aligned perfectly through the roman numeral XII.

"She gave us this clock to spy on us," Julian said, his eyes glittering with cold calculation. "She wanted to know every conversation we had, every argument we had, so she could tear us apart from the inside."

Clara gasped. "She was watching us?"

"She *thought* she was," Julian turned the clock toward Clara. "Three weeks ago, Mateo found the transmitter during a sweep. I didn't disable it. I hijacked the feed. Every single frame she thought was saving to her private encrypted cloud has actually been routing straight to an offshore server under my name."

Julian held up his smartphone. On the screen was the crystal-clear video replay from thirty minutes ago: Victoria’s face twisting with demonic cruelty, her fingers tearing out Clara’s hair, the horrific moment she forced the bloody hair into Clara’s mouth, followed by the vicious slap across Julian’s face.

"It’s not just an assault," Julian murmured, watching the screen. "It’s first-degree domestic battery of a vulnerable pregnant woman."

"Julian," Clara whispered, shivering. "She won't stop. A video won't break Victoria. She’ll claim it’s a deepfake. She’ll bribe the prosecutors."

"She can’t bribe what she doesn't see coming," Julian said, his eyes darkening. "Tomorrow night is the Sterling Centennial Gala. Five hundred of the most powerful people in the country are walking through those ballroom doors downstairs. And my mother is scheduled to give the keynote address on family legacy."

A chilling silence settled over the room as Julian looked at his bruised, beautiful wife.

"It’s time to show the world the true face of the Sterling legacy."
